Actually the pencils in a gun is a tradition going back to
the seventies or maybe the sixties. It was used in both
comics and movies against vampires.
The advantages are convenience and cheapness. Wooden
bullets don't do well in a rifled gun. The wood tends to
either shatter or smear, in either case ruining the gun for
immediate re-use.
A shotgun can do better, but why spend money ($15-$20 and
up) on an expensive bullets when $2 can buy you a 18 vampire
killers.
This is a Nabiki run outfit after all.
Now the Executioner Universe you have to use Silver bullets,
seriously expensive, or a shotgun load of wood pellets, up
close and destroy the head and/or heart. Not cheap. Now
there is a series that uses modern technology to kill old
enemies. Submachine guns, shotguns, grenades, pistols, cars,
flame throwers, she has used almost anything to kill the
evil vampires or weres.

If violence is not solving your
problems you're just not using enough of it.

"I guess I'm just an old-fashioned sentimentalist at heart.
I refuse
to accept a no-win scenario. I hate the thought of a
universe without
justice. If the maneuverings of dark powers can't be
exposed and
defeated by the pure of heart, then there's no point in
anything. I
can't believe that."
