Don't ask how I ended up getting this idea.... Just, don't ask.

I shan't. Like most Lovecraftian monsters, I doubt my sanity could take
seeing it.

You're a Lovecraftian monster? ;P

Anyway...

For ages, C'thulu had tried to make contact with the land dwellers.
That in itself was not hard - it was difficult to miss a giant
squid-headed humanoid walking your way - but his aura seemed to turn all
those who saw him to gibbering insanity. He had tried all kinds of
tricks to get around this; one of his bigger disasters was in trying to
persuade one of his new converts to write his message down, such that
others could read and comprehend without having to see him. Alas, the
Necronomicon failed to convey warm fuzzies and peace.

Then, one day, a woman looked upon him and failed to go insane. Some
would say that was because she was already insane in her own way, but
nevertheless, his sight did not faze her.

"What manner of human are you," he wondered, "that I do not inflict on
you the same curse I unfortunately bestow on so many others?"

She looked at him, looked at her fishing rod, looked at him again, and
gently put her rod aside lest tugging on the line injure him. "What do
you mean, 'curse'?"

"Alas, for eons, all who have beheld my visage have gone insane. I do
not know what I am doing wrong: I match the ancient formula perfectly.
Bizaare, otherworldly looks, yet made from familiar elements. Wisdom
from ages past. The heart to tell good from evil. And scarce little
power of my own, save what I influence others to do. It is to my great
sorrow that almost all of the works in my name have been acts of evil."

"Hmm." Misaki cocked her head. "Wait, are you saying you want to be
cute?"

"In a word, yes."

"Oh! That's easy." Her eyes smiled as her mouth spoke. "Just shrink
down a lot, say no higher than my knee right now. People get scared of
big things. Oh, and you might try drying your skin a bit more when you
come out of the water: the wet and slimy look is out."

---

"And that," Ayeka concluded, "is why the Ancient Ones bend their knee to
Jurai, and specifically to Misaki's daughters." She motioned to Sasami
and the array of plushie-like creatures holding a semi-serious, but
mostly lighthearted court near the beach. "Tsunami has little to do
with it."

Washu held her tongue. Getting the hidden dwellers of Earth to preach
fealty to the same empire Tsunami hoped the humans would also rejoin
just had to be *so* convenient. Then again, perhaps it was just a
coincidence. Regardless, it was amusing seeing Ryo-ohki on the
sidelines, pouting because she had been out-cuted by this mob.
