That's a pretty powerful spell to be treated so off-handedly.
I don't know, Brian.. from the description, it sounds
like it detects nothing more than those thoughts that a person
- should he, she or it be prone to it - might mutter or mumble
out loud without realizing it.
Surface thoughts are just that. Surface only, and very
shallow. For that matter, I know several people whose lips
actully move as they read, so much so that you can read the
book along with them just by watching their face. This spell
strikes me as being on that sort of level.
True, that's not a major spell in many series, but in GD nobody
seems to be able to read anybody else's mind at all, ever, not
even surface thoughts. Even the archmage Dr. Diggers doesn't do
so (at least not casually. He probably can in specific instances,
though I can't remember any.)
Including a D&D reference or similar should solve the problem,
though.
One might even give it the name "Bad Poker Face Spell",
as that's the sort of thoughts this spell picks up. The thoughts
that you can see clearly in the expression of a really PATHETIC
poker player.
Considering the constantly growing number of intelligent scorned
women out for Tirga's blood, he has a pretty good poker face. :)
