This is *NOT* an altered version of the
Careful Destiny universe; it's an alteration of the canon Ranma/Sailor Moon
universe. Careful
Destiny's world is similar in some respects because the initial changes are
similar.
Let's see.
Ranma leaping from the canon universe into a world where:
-He has a sister named Ranko, who is the martial artist of the family.
-He himself doesn't do martial arts.
-He harasses his sister because she does martial arts.
-He hangs out with Gosunkugi.
-He's never met Akane.
-He's not engaged to anyone.
-He still has all his skills and memories, but the body he's using is rusty
as hell.
Compared to Careful Destiny, in which Ranma is transplanted to a world
where:
-He has a sister named Ranko, who is the martial artist of the family.
Not original to CD, and already explained. As I mentioned earlier, Ranko
is from a modified version of Ranma's female name. Actually, if I were to
credit anyone with this, it would be Deborah Goldsmith.
-He himself doesn't do martial arts.
A direct consequence of not going on the training trip, as well as the
reasons why. If you'd like, send me a private e-mail and I'll explain in more
detail in private, but it'll contain spoilers.
He harasses his sister because she does martial arts.
No... he doesn't. Ranko just thinks he did.
He hangs out with Gosunkugi.
Already explained.
-He's never met Akane.
A direct consequence of the divergance, Ranma not being a martial
artist, as well as the reasons... besides, he *HAS* met her. She just hasn't
really noticed him.
-He's not engaged to anyone.
Oh? We'll see... do you *REALLY* think that Genma wouldn't sell his son
out a few times?
-He still has all his skills and memories, but the body he's using is rusty
as hell.
I'll give you this one.
...yeah, you're right. There's absolutely nothing suggesting you're using a
modified version of the Careful Destiny altverse there.
There are similarities, but it's primarily because we took the canon
Ranmaverse (or a canon Ranma universe with Sailor Moon's events going on in
the background) and made a very similar modification: Ranma not going on the
training trip (albeit for different reasons). There are far more differences
than similarities.
Seriously, dude, just admit you took the CD universe for your own fanfic and
changed it up some, and give Todd his props. There's no shame in it as long
as you own up to it. There IS, however, shame in lying and claiming
otherwise.
I'm not lying and claiming otherwise. Why not compare it to Messed Up,
or Field of Change? Heck, why not compare it to Family Man (a recent movie)
or Chrono Cross (a Playstation game)? There are similarities there, too. This
is basically another example of an entire genre of fiction, one in which a
character gets to see what would have happened if things went differently at
some point in their lives. In Ranma's case, the most suitable events in his
life (for alt-universe fics) were... leaving on the training trip, Jusenkyo,
and the Neko-ken. Now, just how many alternate universe fics diverge at the
last two? Is it really a surprise that some diverge at the first? Unlike
Jusenkyo or the Neko-ken, though, the training trip really can only go two
ways: either he goes or he doesn't. If he doesn't, he's likely to live a
relatively boring life, not really suitable for a story, *UNLESS* we take
canon or post-canon Ranma and put him in that situation.
