I appreciate where CG is coming from, in some respects.  There's a lot of
BAD SI fics out there.  News flash, there's a lot of BAD non-SI fics.
There's a lot of bad movies.  There's a lot of bad music.  There's a lot of
bad books.  There's a lot of bad _anything_.

Well, much as I thoroughly enjoy it, I wouldn't list it among the best.
Twister was (and still is, as of the most recent stuff of his I've read)
evolving as a writer, and TP (particularly the early parts) is often
painfully primitive.  But it is certainly one of the most *definitive*
self-inserts out there, and of historical and educational value for that 
reason alone.

I'd list myself there, but I'm not _quite_ enough of an egomaniac to list my
unworthy works to that list.

Well, enough of this. One of the more frustrating things of being a SI
author is the fact that when people attack the genre I feel personally
attacked as well.

There's a certain appropriate symmetry to that sentiment.  <grin>  But I
know what you mean.  "Drunkard's Walk II" isn't an insert in the sense
that we are using here -- in fact, in some ways it's intended as a fond,
gentle satire of SIs -- but I often feel the same way.  There seems to 
be a general perception that an author's presence inside his own written
works is a vice limited to the ghetto world of fanfiction, when that 
simply isn't the case.  Contrary to the croakers, SI can be found in all
varieties of fiction, fan and professional, with all levels of involvement
with the action.  (Three widely varying inserts that spring immediately
to mind are Edmund Ormondroyd's presence inside his book "Time At The 
Top", Mark Twain disguising himself as "Tom Sawyer", and Gene Wesley
Roddenberry's Wesley Crusher.)  While it does seem to be particularly
common in our preferred venue of writing, self-insertion doesn't 
automatically flag a work as sub-standard.
