One minor, itsy-bitsy, teenie weenie little prob with the fic...
Since Kachiko, in her ripe old age of seventeen, hasn't yet married the
'old pervert', then why was she referred to by past friends and
acquaintances as 'Miss Tendou' For some reason she has the same maiden name
as her future husband?
Quite simply, because she is Tendou Kachiko. Her husband to be, obviously,
married into the Tendou family, as Ranma will when he marries Akane.
I had written up something about this a while back, but have since misplaced
it; so I'll take a brief stab at it again:
Japanese marriage customs are not the same as American marriage customs.
In America (and other Western nations), the custom is for the bride to take
on the surname of the groom.
In Japan, particularly in situations involving older, more established
families or transferrence of property, the husband often marries into the
wife's family. It has a lot to do with inheritance, dowry, and
whatnot...basically, if the eldest child is a daughter, and her dowry and
inheritance is the family estate and other property owned by the family,
then when she marries, the husband will take *her* surname, and become the
master of the estate.
This has already been made obvious early in this fic: Kachiko goes home *to
the dojo*. She doesn't go home someplace else in Japan. She goes to the same
home her future husband and daughters live at. Why? Because it's HER HOUSE.
Soun inherited it from her family, the Tendous, when he married her. When
Ranma marries Akane, he will inherit the house and dojo, and he will become
Tendou Ranma.
