The difficulty in writing 1st person POV is that the reader can only have 
as much information as the POV character does.  If the reader knows more 
than the POV does about what's going on in that particular story, then the 
writer has blown all reason for using 1st person POV.

However, unless your story is totally original and not part of any form of 
series (or the reader is not familiar with any form of the series you're 
writing in), it's nearly impossible to pull this off in any way that will 
be surprising to the reader, particularly when writing fanfic.  This is 
because the reader will already know things about the characters, from 
prior stories or uses of the characters.  What surprise is it for your 
reader if your 1st person POV character goes to Nabiki Tendo for a loan? - 
the only one likely to be surprised is the POV, as reader probably already 
knows she's highly likely to turn him down flat or charge extortionate 
interest rates.
