 Circumstance and Consequence
Prologue: Happy Birthday to Me...

>From the roof of the Tendo Dojo, Saotome Ranma gazed at the sunset and
basked in his own self-pity. In his hand was a single blue frosted bakery
cupcake crowned by a single small candle. It was the solitary marker he had
seen all day to commemorate the date of his birth, and he had bought it
himself.

This really irked him. Everyone else had birthdays. The Tendo sisters had
rather garish affairs. Shampoo and even Mousse celebrated the Amazon way.
Hell even Ryouga got a happy birthday and a pat on the when he showed up.

I don't believe that for a moment.

Quite apart from this vague impression I have that the Japanese celebrate
turning another year older on New Years rather than on what we'd call a
birthday, (which is, I think, why Ranma 1/2 had Valentine's Day stories,
and New Year's Day stories, and Christmas stories, and fall ghost festival
stories but never a birthday story), assuming that they do celebrate
birthdays in Nerima, there is very little doubt in my mind that
nobody in Nerima would know the day that Ryouga was born on. There's also
no doubt in my mind that if Shampoo or Kodachi knew the day Ranma
was born on and they celebrated birthdays, she'd try to give Ranma a
"present"...nudge-nudge, wink-wink, knowhatimean? And I'm pretty sure
that Ukyo would give Ranma a free okonomiyaki with a happy birthday
written on it, at least.

Also...how would Ranma even know the day of his birth if his parents
never celebrated it? And why doesn't Nodoka do anything for it, if
Japanese celebrate it?

Of course, given that Japanese celebrate birthdays in the story, it might
be cute if the fiancees got had gotten together to throw a surprise party
for Ranma, but then he never came home.
