Well, she *is* a princess, and more importantly the heir apparent to the
current monarch of Seyruun. As such, she's probably had at least a bit
of military training, on the off chance that she ever has to lead what
army Seyruun has (say, a volunteer army fending off some invaders).
Which is another reason Xel told her the spell but not Lina: Lina's no
army commander.
