No, "fell" is proper -- from Webster's Ninth Collegiate Diction Dictionary,
meaning 4:  1 a: FIERCE, CRUEL, TERRIBLE  b: SINISTER, MALEVOLENT 

It's related to the word "felon", through the Old French word "fel".
