As I recall, the front door doesn't even *have* a lock; it's a traditional
sliding door arrangement that you couldn't really put a lock on in the
first place.  The front gate might have a lock, but I don't recall 
ever seeing it closed, let alone locked.  I can recall at least one 
instance of an uninvited guest just walking into the Tendo home.
Traditionally, even urban Japan has been the kind of place where you
don't need to lock your doors.
