Oh, the word "isha" means "Doctor" in Japanese. I
used it in a previous
chapter and carefully made sure the term was
understandable from context,
but I am so slow about getting these things out, I
don't imagine anyone will
remember.

Actually... that should be "Oisha" with the honorific "O"
at the beginning.  But the usage is incorrect.  A person
is a doctor (small "d")...that is Oisha-san (as they say
in Japanese).  Doctor or Doctor Tofu is Sensei or Tofu
Sensei... doctor big "D."

       "Certainly! Why do you think I have remained
so
circumspect?" the old man answered with a rueful
grin, but
then suddenly his eyes grew cold as he asked, "If
the
world
has become so dangerous, why have you so steadfastly
maintained your ignorance of it?"
 
        "I...I...well...I..." Ranma stammered.
 
        "Because that blockhead of a father of yours
thinks it
unmanly to study?" the old man asked.
 
       "Naw, well, it's not that really. It's just
that...Look
here! Have ever actually looked at a salary-man? I
ain't
seen
one yet that could fight his way out of a wet paper
bag!"

  

***I'll lend Ranma a hand here... take a note from Washu
in Tenchi Muyo.  His ignorance of the world has less to do
with knowing what is out there and being able to survive,
and more to do with choosing to not want to become a part
of the problem.  I'll assume the counter-argument is
"pillar of the community" which to be honest is not
Japanese...especially in Tokyo.  Japanese people will just
walk by when someone is being robbed, stabbed, etc.  They
try to avoid conflict and accepting responsibility for
anything they don't already know the outcome to (i.e.
repair and support services).
