use the word "Dad"

'My dad jumped off a cliff.'  --this is correct.
'My father jumped off a cliff.' --this is also correct.

'Go jump off a cliff, Dad.' --correct.
'Go jump off a cliff, Father.' --correct.

The difference here is that dad and father are being used as names in the
second pair of examples, while they are not in the first.  In the first, you
could easily replace 'dad' or 'father' with 'cat' or 'dog'.  It's just the
same as saying 'I drove my car off a cliff.' with respect to the lack of
difference between car, father, dad, dog, cat, etc.  They are all informal
names for things, and thus don't need to be capitalized.

'old man' is the same.  If Ranma were talking to Genma it would be (maybe...
it's an odd case, as it's more regularly used as a description than as a name)
correct to capitalize it.  It looks very clumsy, however, and I would
recommend replacing old man with Oyaji if you're going to use it as a name to
be capitalized.  It's using japanese in an english fanfic, but oyaji is a word
people can more readily accept as being uppercase.
