Interesting idea, but not _nearly_ wacky enough for Police Squad.
Well, PS/NG humor also relies heavily on sight gags as well, moreso than
many comedies. Also there's always the drop dead delivery Neilson makes with
his lines. He's managed to inject added stamina to his career with his
ability to say a line dead serious and somehow make it funny. But to read
the lines on paper it never comes off quite as amusing.
Frank
Drebin's character is to reply to the literal meaning of the words spoken
to
him, so he's kind of an unintentional straight man, with everyone else
playing the comedian. He's also like Mihoshi, in that he causes chaos
without really even noticing. When he does notice, his bumbling attempts
to
put things right again always result in further pandemonium. That's an
element which is sorely missing from this story.
True, Mihoshi is more in line with Drebbin's character in this case. Though
she's still Mihoshi in behavior as well, if taken to an extreme.
Here, Captain Drebbin is a
competent character with a personality quirk that leans towards using
excessive force to accomplish simple tasks.
I probably should have used the Captain from PS rather than Drebbin, of
course no one actually remembers his name the way we do Drebbin's, so the
connection would be even less obvious than it is.
That's okay, but it falls well
below the level of insanity that made Police Squad what it was.
And I forgot to kill the 'Special Guest Star' in the opening credits. A big
error on my part. That was always a trademark fo the original series. :)
I have full confidence in your ability to write that kind of story, if
you choose. This note is just my way of encouraging it.
I think you badly overestimate me. If I could really write that well, I'd be
a Zucker or one of the Abrhams and working in Hollywood instead of here. :)
I truly believe
that you'll have a better, funnier story if you do.
You're probably right. This wasn't as amsuing as some of the other stuff I
do. It was sort of grown out of the idea of Mihoshi's idea of how a bad cop
should behave, and grew from there. Rather than simply have Mihoshi act
whacky, I decided to make the entire station off kilter and Kiyone as the
sole straight man to everything. But it wasn't as humorous as it could have
been.
Actually this isn't so much a series as ideas for Mihoshi and Kiyone where
standard police procedures fail and the criminals fall victim to Mihoshism.
I'll probably cook up something els eventually and it'll be about this size,
but it's more a setting for simple ideas, almost spamfics under the same
heading, rather than yet another series I'll be starting.
Thanks for the help. I will see if I can add anything to it.
