Nice to see something new from you. I've been a big Heinlein fan for a
long time, so I am interested in seeing how you handle the fusion.

It's not a fusion, really. I just found the Heinlein quote especially
appropriate, given that what I'd already decided that Japan would be part of
America in this world.

From following paragraphs, I get the feeling Mother and Father are their
proper names, at least within the household. I'm starting to get
Pleasantville flashbacks. :})

Not really. It's just that *I* don't think of my parents by their proper names,
and Sam is pretty formal.

One quick check of her algebra problems later, Sam has packed her
books
(both text- and note-) into her satchel, along with a collection of Robert
E.
Howard's poetry to read in study hall. (This book, for the curious, is also
not
on her approved reading list.)

Which makes me wonder what the sanctions are for reading unapproved books.

Confiscation, basically, and loss of priveliges. Since the latter involves
work, you can see why Father gives them an out earlier on.

"Perhaps we should leave," Rune says softly.
"And animal control," Mary adds, turning to stare at the cat.

Nice touch. Will Mary recognize Rune's cat form if she sees it again?

Yep. That's another reason that Rune changed her mind about living with Sam.

I can just see her asking Father for help. "Yes Sam,that's nice," looking
over the top of his evening paper.

More like, "Hand over the amulet, and I'll see what some of our experts can
discover. Hand it over. NOW."

Of course, he does work for the Agency
(what ever that is). It would be interesting if he's investigating the
same incidents Sam gets involved in as Sailor Moon or whatever she will be
calling herself in this story.

Some of them, maybe.

Chris Davies.
