It would be very, very easy to include, as well.  A quest for the cure doesn't
have to be described, just a short mention at the end of the bit where Ranma
finds out he has cancer and is going to recieve treatment would work.
Something to the effect that Akane was going to go to Ryuugenzawa(sp?  can't
remember the exact name) to get the water while Ranma began his radiation
treatment.

Then, later on, when the 30 pounds lighter bit is mentioned, it could be
brought up again, saying it didn't work.  After all, we don't really know much
about the Water of Life, and cancer isn't exactly an ordinary illness or
injury--the cells themselves are perfectly healthy, aren't they?  Just mutated
and growing at an abnormal rate or something.  I don't know much at all about
cancer, but I've gotten that impression from somewhere... So, why would the
Water of Life fix anything?  It'd be easy to have it not help at all, and it
contributes to the story by plugging in an obvious plot hole.  Another brief
comment about their asking Tofu if he knows of any obscure healing methods
would work, as well, but basically bringing up the Water of Life, and then
saying that it and nothing else they had found had worked, would do the trick.

Something else that could be a neat little addition would be to say that they
contacted Ryouga, to try to have him relocate the Mushrooms of Aging.  Send
Ranma back a few years, and get the cancer treated while it was still
localized.  Ryouga, unfortunately, is unable to find the Mushrooms...

I can't think of anything else that would be obvious for a cure right off the
top of my head, but tossing these two in there would really help out quite a
bit.
