I have a different suggestion, though Nicholas might hate it.

Don't use Ranma for the story.  Use something else that it fits better with,
some series without a lot of magic, like Macross, or Orange Road.  The only
benefit you get from using Ranma is that you get a bigger audience, but you
end up trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.  There's nearly nothing
about the story that requires Ranma, and if you use a more appropriate series
you don't *need* to explain that they tried a half dozen magical cures that
didn't work.
