Are there rooks in shogi?

The way I understood it, Shogi is pretty close to chess. They use a
lot of the same pieces.

It's not exactly the same, but it is derived from the same original
Indian game of Chaturanga.  If anyone is looking for information to
give their fanfic authentisity, or just interested in learning how to
