I don't think this is a major hole until the end. It IS
true, at that point, that 'Those' could stare at a repro
created by Ed, instead of the original. But what would
be the fun of that? :)
So? Make it so this particular counter-virus was designed to lock
itself to a certain person, to bind those exposed to the virus to the
person. In the explosion, it locked itself to the nearest surviving
living being - i.e., Mihoshi. The "lock" takes effect by requiring
certain pheromone-like scents as they stare at the image, DNA-tagged to
the one it's locked to. In short: if they're not close enough to
Mihoshi to smell her - and the tatooed area isn't exposed so it can give
off its pheromones - it wouldn't do them any good. If you want
further justification, the tatoo subtly changes itself in sync with the
pheromones over time; an extremely sophisticated holo might be able to
keep up, but then they'd be staring at a holo of her butt in her
presence, so they might as well just stare at the real thing.
Also, about the flaw in Mihoshi'a 'enhancements' ...
she acts the way she does *all* the time... and
afaics, in most of the original story,
she doesn't experience much "extraordinary exertions,
injuries, or, for that matter, elevated levels of
exposure to ultraviolet radiation"... so, obviously
there's got to be another reason for her personality.
Perhaps in that 'take your kids to work day' incedent, she
was effected by something, or multiple somethings?
Obviously I wasn't clear here. The idea was that if one's
blood supply was inhibited by the causes given, that
the brain suffered permanent damage. That corresponds to
real life with humans, I believe: brain cells will start
to die off if deprived of blood, and it doesn't necessarily
matter if the blood supply is restored later.
I'd have to agree with Benjamin here. Yes, some damage will occur, but
if that's how she's been her entire life, she'd adapt to it...and then,
as a GP officer away from the beach, she normally wouldn't have anything
diverting her blood from her brain, so she'd be even smarter when on the
job.
But partly, of course, I just felt that Mihoshi's enhancements
had to have SOME drawback; given their possibility,
otherwise every woman would want them.
Instead of blood supply, it may be better to state in terms of brain
capacity to handle the increased sensitivity. More brain volume
devoted to sensory processing == less for ahything else, like fine
motor coordination or higher thought.
Seriously, though, I'm aware that I didn't explain Mihoshi's
luck in this story, and it would have been an obvious place
to do so. Part of this is my conscious decision to keep
some mysteries in place. However, I _did_ place one, and
only one, clue, as to why events might not follow causation
around Mihoshi. (I won't necessarily use this same clue
later on, so it's not necessarily a spoiler if I point it
out.) But did you notice the name and description of Mihoshi's
mother?
You mean Mihoshi as the fourth avatar, after Ryoko, Tenchi, and the
now-deceased Dr. Clay?
