Well, it is 'fire', and 'fire' is the kanji in 'Mars', so that's correct.

'Ai' seems to have something to do with Venus, but it's the wrong kanji.

'Ai' is 'love', which is what Venus is frequently associated with.

Mars is associated with war, but the kanji in Rei's name isn't the kanji for
'war'--it's the kanji used in the name of the planet.  Venus is the only one
that follows a different pattern.

I was going talk about chronology here, then I realise I couldn't make heads
or tails of your explaination of the non-repeated year.

Well, look at it this way: In the original series, there's an extra year
that everyone forgot about.  In this series, there isn't.  So in this series,
everything happens one year earlier--it just seems the same because everyone
would have forgotten the extra year anyway.  And the proper time for
Chibi-Usa to appear is one year earlier than before.  It's still 1995--but
it's an "earlier" 1995.
