You're establishing the contrast between Kasumi and Akane very
effectively here, but I find that I'm still wondering how Kasumi
managed to get this way. One can see this attitude from a very
self-confident woman, but what in Kasumi's background gives rise
to such confidence in her attractiveness? Just the recent
experience with Taro?

But we don't know anything about Kasumi in high school. We
know Akane has her admirers, and so does Nabiki, although she
apparently makes it a point never to date the same guy twice. I
would imagine that Kasumi got a lot of attention from guys during
her high school years, especially as she's definitely more like
the traditional ideal of the Japanese woman than either of her
sisters. If we're postulating something other than the blindly
oblivious Kasumi, I would certainly think that she's well aware
of her own attractiveness. Given the above postulate, Vince's
depiction seems eminently reasonable.

That's about the way I was imagining it, actually...

"Yo, how's it going?"

"Can't complain. Yourself?"

"Well, I was wondering if you could tell me...."

"Ha, look at that blush!"

"Cut it out, willya?!"

"OK, OK. So, what matters of the heart can I help ya with?"

"Er... it's about Tendo-san..."

"Oh? What about her? Look, you better not be--"

"No, no, nothing like that. I was just wondering... how come she doesn't
have a boyfriend? Is her cooking awful or somethin'?"

"BWAHAHA! Hehe! Oh, that's right, you're new here. Well, let's ask
the man who knows. Yo, Kensuke!"

"Yo yourself. What?"

"Tell Jiro here about how you got a taste of Kasumi-san's bento."

"Hm? Well, she asked me to carry some stuff home for her one time, see?
I was thinking 'chance!', of course, but nothing. She just had more stuff
than she could carry herself. But she did bring me a bento the next day."

"And how was it?"

"I told you, nothing. I tried chatting her up, and she was sweet like
always, but it was like she heard me talking but wasn't hearing what I was
saying, you know?"

"No, I mean the bento!"

"Oh. Excellent. Even better than my mother's. Almost as good as my
grandmother's. The kind that makes you feel good just to open the box."

"There you go."

"So, she's pretty, she's good-natured, her cooking is great and she's
available, then? My kind of girl!"

"Hey, I warned you to talk nice about--"

"She doesn't have time."

"Oh, hi, Kumiko. What's that?"

"She doesn't have time for a BOYfriend. She does all the housework since
her mother passed away. Between going to school, taking care of her
sisters and that basket case of a father of theirs, when's she going to go
on dates? So she always says 'sorry, I can't' even if she likes the guy.
Not that that's going to be an issue with YOU losers."

"Oh. Damn shame."

"You said it..."
