I have to say that I disagree with the tone of Gary
Kleppe's review of this fic. As the author of
"Understanding" (cited as an inspiration for this fic
in the credits) I saw the similarity (which is
probably more in tone than anything else) and I am
honoured by it.
What I don't think Mr. Kleppe has realized about these
fics is that this sense of watchful waiting, which I
tried to convey in "Understanding" and QS has (in my
opinion, at least) succeeded in portraying here, *is*
the point. These are one-shots; they are not the
first chapter in a longer fic, nor intended to be
followed up, nor to be action-driven. This is shoujo,
ladies and gentlemen, with all that implies.

standard disclaimers
I am of mixed feelings about this sort of disclaimer.
I myself write longer disclaimers, giving credit to
several parties and I try to slip a bit of wordplay or
a series-specific joke in. That is *my* style. But
this disclaimer is, you must admit, much better than
no disclaimer at all.
I finally understand Kagome- well, as well as I
ever
will. It's a terribly thing to be jealous of
yourself. How she dealt with Kikyou as gracefully
as
she did I'll never know, but the least I can do is
return the favor- no matter how much I want to keep
her away from Inu Yasha, and declare that she is
mine.
Damn it, we were born into the same time- can't she
understand? She is mine, and I am hers. That's the
way it's meant to be.
Perhaps these three words should be emphasised? He
is, after all, a teenager.
I first noticed Kagome when we transferred from
elementary school to junior high. We hadn't been in
the same school until them, and even though I must
have passed her on the street a hundred times, I
didn't know her. I guess it was a touch of me being
blind- again. I've never been particularly
observant,
but sometimes I amaze even myself in how dense I can
be.
I would, at this point, draw a parallel between his
past incarnation and his present one. Part of the
point of the fic is to emphasise the more subtle
similarities, after all.
Yes, I'm guessing who it is, already - there is, after
all, only one person it can really be....
It's a strange tale that time has woven for us.
Two
souls, both entwined intricately together,
inadvertanty wounding each other. Kikyou and
Kagome... Inu Yasha and myself... where does one end
and the other begin? It makes my head spin, when I
bother to think on it. That's why I don't bother
to-
Shippou would say that nothing has changed, since I
never thought about anything in the past.
And that is probably the best explanation I have yet
found for Houjou's blindness.
"Houjou-kun! I'm so sorry I'm late!" Kagome says,
coming up to stand beside me.
And it's confirmed. ^_^ I've actually always had a
sneaking suspicion Takahashi-sensei will resolve the
series this way; Houjou is so very different to
Inu-Yasha, and yet in his steadfastness and faith in
Kagome so very much the same, it would be both funny
and poignant if they turn out to be the same man.
Reborn to be by her side when the Bone Eater's Well
closes for the last time on her. I will be here for
her then, and perhaps this time, we can have our
happy
ending.
But somehow I think Kagome won't be happy unless he
tells her what happened.
Overall, I liked it; I myself would have gone into his
recovery of his memories and his dealing with them
more fully, but as it was it's a satisfying read.
