"The terrorist attack against the United States on September 11, 2001 is
widely recognized as the the immediate catalyst of the First Unification
War. Although the conflict had nothing to do with grow-ing cooperation
between the Americas, Western Europe, and Russia in forming a lasting
political compact and defense against alien invasion, the roots of the
entire span of conflict in the first decade lay in the ashes the Near East
and Central Asia-two cultural landmasses passing reluctantly and often
violently into history. However, these regions would give birth to and
profoundly shape the anti-unification movement the Western powers faced in
the latter half of the decade. The residual impact of World War Three and
the arrival of the Visitor also contributed to a global environment prone
to difficult and brutal conflict. At the same time, the Western powers
struggled to piece to-gether a genuine alliance and defense to stand
against invasion from space. Time would magnify these competing priorities
as the major powers learned more of the increasing threat both from space
and those violently opposed to a Westeenized international political
structure. These anti-unificationists would seek out new, more powerful
allies and fight their war on a whole new array of fronts."
