Dream
a fanfiction epilogue for Final Fantasy X
-------
Warning: There are massive SPOILERS here up to the end of the game. Heck,
the viewpoint of the fic alone is already a spoiler. You've been warned.
All characters copyright by Squaresoft. I am not making money off of
writing this nor do I intend to.
-------
I had a dream
I was standing on the Al Bhed airship again, watching you disappear into
mist, like the dream I only then realized you really were. I called out
to you, told you I loved you. Hoping against hope that somehow, what I
felt could somehow change the inevitable.
And why shouldn't it? Didn't what you feel change my fate? I would have
died fighting Sin were it not for you. If love could save me, why
couldn't it save you? Was fate so cruel?
You knew, of course, that there would be no miracle. You watched me with
your sky blue eyes as I tried to be strong, tried not to cry. Even then,
it was obvious that it was me you were worried about. Why? I wasn't the
one about to die ... you were! I couldn't take it, couldn't look into
your eyes knowing it's for the last time. And so I turned away.
As you tried to confort me. I could hear your clothes rustling right
behind me, could see your arms try desperately to enfold me in an
intimate embrace. But I couldn't feel you, couldn't feel the warmth of
your skin next to mine, your hot breath against my ear.
I COULDN'T FEEL YOU!
Suddenly, my miracle happened, and I could.
I think you were surprised as I was, but you managed to recover before
I did. While I was still in shock, you tightened your loving grip around
me. And then....
"I love you too Yuna."
Then I woke up. And all I could do was weep.
--------
It was at Lucca port 4 that Lulu found me. As was my morning ritual, I
was whistling loudly, trying to reach you, and always failing.
"I thought I'd find you here." I'm glad that Lulu didn't try to stop me
from calling to you. Unlike most people, who can't seem to get it into
their heads that I still love you. I may move on (how I dread that day!),
but not now. Not yet. First I must try.
"You'll be late for the opening kickoff. And you know Wakka will be
disappointed if you don't watch his triumphant return to blitzball." Lulu
said again.
"I'm sorry, I'm just about done. Could you please just go on ahead
without me? I promise I'll catch up. You know I wouldn't miss Wakka's
debut for the world."
"Alright, I'll be waiting for you in box seat B. Kimahri and Rikku are
already there. I just have to go visit the village idiot and tell him not
to hurt himself out there."
We both wound up smiling. "Sure. Oh, and tell Wakka good luck from me."
"Sure. If that's all then I should be going ..." As she turns to leave, I
remember something.
"You still haven't answered my question from before."
"Which one dear?"
"How come you get to enter the men's locker room at will anyway?" I had
to admit I was still mildly curious.
Lulu raised an eyebrow at that. "Little sister, you forget who you're
talking to." With that parting remark, she turns and leaves.
I sighed, knowing I'll never be even half as elegant as her.
--------
Rikku and I have a running bet as to when Lulu and Wakka are going to
bite the bullet and get married. Rikku was betting a year. But I've known
them longer.
I bet six months.
Surely Chappu wouldn't mind. He died facing Sin so that both Lulu and his
older brother could be safe, so he must be ecstatic that the both of them
might eventually find happiness together. Of course, we'll never know for
sure. Ever since Sin died, the Farplane hasn't been working. Yet another
thousand year old tradition shattered by us.
*sigh*
Thinking of the two of them together reminds me of you. Nearly everything
these days reminds me of you. I wish I could talk to Rikku more often,
she always knows how to cheer me up. But she's so busy these days, what
with her and Uncle Cid trying to rebuild Home, while all I could do was
wish them well.
I sighed again, as I looked out to the sea. I want you with me. I need
you with me.
Where do dreams go when they die?
Finally, after gazing out for a long while, I headed for the stadium.
--------
The Aurochs won of course. After going face to face with Sin and
surviving, I sincerely doubted Wakka would have any trouble with a couple
of Blitzball jocks. Right now, he's up on the podium looking like he
wants to say something, which I find strange, he's never been one to
speak after a game. The crowd hushes as he starts shouting out
something...
"I'd jus' like ta dedicate this first win to my two li'l bruddas. Chappu
... Tidus ... this win's for you man!"
That started the crowd up again! They knew who Chappu was, but they
didn't know who you are. Oh well, be glad for your anonymity. It would be
nice not to be famous, don't you think?
Anyway, Wakka has jumped off the podium and is heading back to the locker
rooms. All of us go as well, we were going to a post-game celebration,
just the five of us.
You'd have liked it.
--------
I think I'm dreaming again.
It's sundown, and I'm at port 4 again, looking at the sun go down. As I
am about to whistle for the tenth and last time for today, I hear
something...
Could it be...?
I cock my head, trying to hear the sound again. Was it just my
imagination? After a few seconds, I turn back, knowing my heart was
playing cruel tricks on me again.
Then I hear it again ... a faint answering whistle.
Without thinking, I dive right off the pier, and swim towards where I
heard it, trying desperately to find you.
After thirty minutes of swimming, Im about to give up. The port is far
away in the horizon, all around me is the ocean. I decide to just float
here for awhile. Wouldnt it be nice to just drift away, without a care
in the world?
"Sorry it took me so long to get here. It took awhile to wake up again."
I right myself and turn around, not believing my ears. And there you
were, floating with a silly grin on your face. And then you embrace me
gently.
God! This feels so good. I never want you to let go of me again! After a
while, I manage to find my voice.
"How?"
"A dream doesnt have to die when you wake up does it? You called, so I
came."
We float there for awhile, at peace with the world.
"You know, youve gotten pretty good at whistling." You say with a smile,
as you hold me in your arms.
"Practice." I said, then, not able to contain myself, I kiss you, hard.
We eventually have to stop. I can barely stop giggling when I see your
flushed face.
"Wow, youve gotten pretty good at that too." You says, partly amazed.
Then, with a mock serious frown "That had better not been from practice!"
I cant help it, being with you again, the touch of you, the feel of you,
I start to cry. Tears of relief, tears of joy, all dissolve in the vast
ocean.
"Hey hey, no more crying after we defeat Sin remember? Smile!"
So I do. And I dont think Ive ever stopped since.
--------
I have a dream.
And this time, I'm not letting you go.

End
Author's notes: [SPOILER] Man, never have I played a game that made me
cry after finishing it. This was written in the 2 hours after finishing
the game. No prereading has been done on this thingie as Switch and crew
haven't played FFX yet and I really don't want to spoil it for them.
Written to Pierrot's "Haruka," Do As Infinity's "Fukai Mori," Hamasaki
Ayumi's "Dearest," Ritsuko Okazaki's "For Fruits Basket," Maaya
Sakamoto's "Birds,", and, of course, Rikki's "Suteki Da Ne."
Ah, I feel better now.
