-Chapter One-
"And in conclusion...." Preisdent Loire began to
cough and back violently, covering his mouth.
Those attending the Presidential Banquet were
concerned. The President had looked fine. Now he
seemed to be choking on something. But what? They
hadn't even served the food yet.
"Laguna!" Kiros moved to help his friend.
Laguna doubled over and grabbed a napkin,
covering his mouth as Kiros escorted him into the restroom.
Kiros stood guard near the stall as Laguna leaned over the
toilet, coughing and hacking until he was finally finished.
"You okay," Kiros asked. "What happened?"
"I had a hairrball," Laguna explained, as he passed Kiros and
headed back out to the banquet.
"You had a *what*?" Kiros hurried after Laguna. "Hang on, a
moment," he pulled Laguna aside. "Now, what the hell is going
on?"
"I'm not sure," Laguna admitted. "Its too soon to tell."
"But you have an idea, don't you?"
Laguna nodded. "I might," he said. "But I don't want to create a
panic. It could take a while before things develop."
"Please, Laguna. At least tell me. I'm your friend. I want to be there
for you, but I can't do that unless you tell me what's wrong?"
"Kiros, after our last mission together, I was badly injured."
"You already told me that the Shumis found you and nursed you
back to health," Kiros reminded his friend and President.
"What I didn't mention before was that I was in need of blood. The
Shumi didn't have any human blood, of course, so they used their
own. Now you'll recall I told you a few interesting things about the
Shumi when we first got back together.."
Kiros remembered Laguna's remarks about the Shumi. He recalled
Laguna's remarks about their way of life, and about..
"My god," he said. "Sir, you don't think you're turning into a
Moomba?!"
"I don't know," Laguna confided. "I know that I'm undergoing
the transformation to some extent, but its hard to say how far it
will go. I may remain human and just develope some Moomba
characteristics, such as heightened senses. Or I could transform
into a Moomba or half-Moomba. We'll have to see what happens."
-Chapter Two-
Kiros escorted Laguna back to the table amidst the cheers of the
crowd, who were glad their President seemed to be feeling much
better.
"Is everything okay?" Squall asked.
Laguna nodded, giving Kiros a silencing glance. He knew he should
tell his son, but now was not the time. There was no need to alarm the
boy if it was only a sensory transformation. But the boy did have a right
to know. On the other hand, would Squall be embarrassed to have a
Moomba as a father? Laguna wondered if there was a way he could slip
away before the transofmation reached its final stages. Squall would grieve
for a while. But in the end he would recover and be able to remember his
father as a human being.
Laguna understood what the Moombas' form represented, but he couldn't
be sure Squall did. Many people saw them as mere beasts. They thought
nothing more of it, not seeing the symbolic nobility in their appearance or
the love and loyalty that shone so fiercely in their eyes.

-Chapter Three-
Laguna lie in Kiros's arms that night, the taller man
still buried within him from a round of gentle
lovemaking, still pumping slowly in the gentle tides of
afterglow. His eyes were half open and he was purring
contentedly.
"Any idea how long it will take," Kiros asked, gently.
"I don't lnow," Laguna admitted.
"Why won't you tell Squall," Kiros voice his concern to
his friend and lover.
"He'd be ashamed of me," Laguna sighed. "His father's
turning into a beast."
"A *Moomba*," Kiros reminded him.
"I know," Laguna nodded. "But Squall..."
"Squall has been to the Shumi Village," Kiros told him.
"He knows the Moombas are not mere beasts. He
won't be ashamed of you, my little Laguna."
Laguna tilted his head a little, imploring Kiros to give
him a scritch behind the ear.

Seifer looked up as Zell walked into his room. "Something on
your mind, Chickenwuss?"
Zell sat on the edge of the bed, chosing to ignore the barb. "Squall's
on edge about something. I think he and Laguna are about to get into
a fight. Laguna's been on edge, too."
"Squall's just concerned for his father, that's all," Seifer put an arm
around Zell. "Look, don't worry about Laguna. I'm sure the transition
will be relatively painless."
"What are you talking about," Zell turned to the boy who had teased
him all those years and looked into the eyes of a lover. He gave a
small gasp. "Seifer... when did you?"
"I always have," Seifer admitted. "I teased you because I couldn't accept
what I have always been. I can't lie to myself any more. I need you,
Chickenwuss."
":My name is Zell," Zell whispered as Seifer drew nearer.
"I know that," Seifer breathed upon Zell's lips as he kissed him,
"Chickenwuss."
"Seifer," Zell broke the kiss after several minutes. "What did you
mean about Laguna?"
"Isn't it obvious," Seifer told him, "the changes in Laguna's behavior, the
time he spent in the Shumi Village after being mortally wounded. He
probably got a blood transfusion while he was there if he was that badly
hurt. And not from a human being either. And we all know what eventually
happens to the Shumis."
"You think Laguna is turning into a Moomba?!" Zell shouted.
"Watch the eardrums, Chickenwuss," Seifer chuckled. "But yeah, I do."

In the next room, Selphie's eyes went wide. Her Sir Lagua was turning
into a Moomba. What would Squall say when he found out. If he rejected
Laguna it would break the older man's heart. She feared the Estharian
President's fragile heart would not be able to handle that.
