Not sure what the range on the radiation of a nuclear missile (they
were nuclear weren't >they?) is though, which could be as bad in the
long run.
After the initial blast, the danger is the fallout, which depends on the
current wind patterns. If Ranma and co. were lucky the wind would be
blowing it out to sea. If they were not, the wind could have carried the
radioactive particles around Ranma's shield and irradiated the landscape
around them. It would be worst if the winds happened to be blowing in
the direction of their travel.
