Funny I see "Mikado" used in western texts so often.  Modern historians,
etc.have followed the modern linguistic form of calling him the "Tennou."
Same meaning, different kanji.

 
I suspect it is because of Rogers and Hammerstein (sp?).

Right spelling, wrong duo.  Gilbert and Sullivan.  "Defer, defer/To the Lord
High Executioner!"

You have a point, though.  After G&S were through with the term, it's difficult
for westerners to hear "Mikado" without sniggering.
