The way I see it, the wand is just a focus. Power comes from the
wizard himself - the wand just helps him concentrate and control it
_consciously_. You could say this in your fanfiction without stretching
the boundaries of "canon" HP.

Actually, IIRC it's "Aveda Kedavra" - it has the same root as
the "abrakadabra" some cartoon wizards are so fond of.
Anyway, I really have to wonder how J.K. Rowling is going to handle this
issue, because as it is now, Harry could probably just use his invisibility
cloak over the summer to steal a gun, then keep it under his robes until the
next time Voldemort shows up and shoot him with it, because it'd be just as
effective (and boy would Voldemort be surprised!)as Adavre Cadavre, which is
supposed to be some ultimate, unblockable spell in the wizardling world.

Well, him doing this would be the same as Ranma pulling a gun on
one of his opponents, for example, or vice-versa (opponents pulling guns
on him), in the original manga or anime. It's just against the
conventions adopted by the story. The hero is a champion of good, and
guns are bad (this _is_ a book targeted at younger readers) - this is
the same reason why he wouldn't use a forbidden spell.
Nothing stops you from writting fanfiction where this happens,
tough. It has been done to Ranma, too :).
