Even though this is techincally story help, it's pushing the line...but
here goes:

First, "Swords & Sorcery & Sushi" is just a working title. I want 
something that reflects D&D, Japanese culture and Love Hina' goofy 
nature. That said, here's my idea.

Hehe...isn't this what they do a Benihana's anyway?  I was there a few
weeks ago, and the chef for our table said "I work magic with fish and
knives!"

"Swords and Sorcery" is the name of a really old RPG system 
IIRC. "Swords & Sushi" might work better.

Swords and Sorcery is also the name of a Ranma fic, I think.  However, I
think the longer alliteration is more amusing.
 

The sad thing is that........its been done. In both the anime 
and manga, there is a chapter about Motoko dreaming of them 
as characters in a RPG computer game. Not quite D&D but close 
enough to make this idea a bit harder to persue.

 
Not really...if he can come up with something different enough, it can
work very well.  I'll have to go back through the manga though, I don't
remember this, though.

Mainly the character classes make sense more or less. 
Keitaro's a bit of a goody two shoes so a cleric fits. If 
he's in the Forgotten Realms, you could make him a Priest of 
Ilmater, God of Suffering.

Heh.  He should also have some sort of damage reduction, I think.
Perhaps some heritage related thing?
 

If Naru and Shinobu are both Spell-casters I would presume 
that you're using the Sorceror and Wizard classes. Naru is 
more erudite than Shinobu so I would think that Naru would 
make the better Wizard since Wizards get their spells through 
hard work and training. Sorcerors largely cast spells by dint 
of talent. (btw, since when could mages fight? Their THACO is 
the worst of all classes.) On the flip side, 3rd Ed's Monk 
might just fit Naru as she's the best unarmed combatant in Hinata-sou.

Well, in 3E, where THAC0 is gone!  GONE GONE GONE!  HAHAHA!  Sorcerers
have slightly better attack modifiers than wizards, to compensate for
the lesser amount of spells they get.  However, there are a large number
of monk/wizards and rogue/wizards in FR.  Naru as a Monk/Wizard and
Shinobu as a Sorcerer works.  You might also want to take a look at some
of the Oriental Adventures classes...they work very well for anime. :)

Motoko would be even more pleased I think if she were made a 
paladin since Shinmeiryu was formed to combat demons.

Actually, to be made a Sohei would probably be the best bet - Sohei (OA)
are warrior monks who are pretty much oriental paladins.  They get
Damage Reduction, Ki Frenzy, immunity to sleep/stunning, deflect arrows,
weapon focus, Remain Concious (OA feat), Mettle, and they are spell
casters.  They have to be lawful, but that should be okay.


 

Mutsumi as an absent-minded psionic or druid (she gets along 
great with
animals) might be fun though.

Now for the premise.......there's nothing wrong with it, its 
a fairly common set up. One means of writing this would be 
for all the action to take place in the fantasy world with 
comments injected by the LH cast in the "real" world. I 
presume that Keitaro would be the DM so the story can be told 
in his perspective.

Either that, or throw the LH cast into a fantasy world.  I suggest a
portal opens up while they're at an Inn.  It's an awfully good way to do
things.

 

Like them having to rescue a princess from the evil warlock 
Kentaro. Or having Seta and Haruka appear as the King and 
Queen of the Kingdom (with Sarah as the bratty princess). The 
key is to make this as different as the "Motoko dreams" 
chapter as possible.

Again, I haven't read it, but it doesn't have to be different, it just
can't be the same, if you get what I mean.  

Do wacky stuff, have Tamo-chan play the part of the Tarrasque 
(bipedal killing machine extraordinare) or have the 
Gandalf-like character (or if you are conversant in TSR, good 
old Elminster) pop up now and then as an older form of Keitaro.

Heh.  

Maybe I'll write some more, someday.
