Hey,
First, "Swords & Sorcery & Sushi" is just a working title. I want
something that reflects D&D, Japanese culture and Love Hina' goofy
nature. That said, here's my idea.
The basic idea of this story is that while cleaning out the
attic at the inn Keitaro finds a trunk filled with old D&D stuff that
belonged to him when he was in high school. A little thinking causes him
to recall that his box of D&D turned up missing after his mom shipped
some things to his grandma for storage. Sure, theres no evidence in the
anime or manga that Keitaro is a D&D fan, but I dont think its a
stretch either.
Keitaro is pretty happy to have this stuff from his youth back
and promptly shows it off to the girls. Their reactions are mixed. Su
and Shinobu seem a little interested since its a game, Makoto just
doesnt get it, Naru doesnt care and Kitsune teases him. Keitaro is a
bit hurt but decides hell do some asking around the cram school the
next day to see if anyone there would be interested in playing.
That over, things go back to normal. But as night falls a nasty
storm rolls in and the power gets knocked out. After securing some
lamps, everyone gathers to try and figure out what they can do to keep
from getting bored until bedtime. (Please note that Keitaro has been
working, Naru studying and Makoto training for most of the day so
theyre all a bit on the tired side.) Keitaro then suggests he teach the
girls to play D&D. Su and Shinobu agree and, with some cajoling, so do
the other girls.
Now I know that a lot of people who might read this will have no
knowledge of D&D, so Im going to have Keitaro give the girls a quick,
simplified lesson in how the game works. Some rules will be bent, some
broken and some stuff just tossed out the window. Most of the boring
stuff related to character creation will be done off screen by Keitaro
who does all that stuff while the girls are off making dinner. When they
come back hes got their characters done. Keitaro then quickly explains
how the dice work, how magic is used and what kind of characters he made
for the girls. Heres a rundown for what Im thinking.
Keitaro: For himself Keitaro chooses a cleric. Im not sure what sort of
god hell serve yet. But I figure a cleric is a good choice for Keitaro
because I think hed really like the idea of his character being able to
fight and use magic. Also, due to odd behavior by the dice, Keitaros
character will be as indestructible as Keitaro himself.
Naru: Naru finds herself cast as a mage. Mages are good at both fighting
and magic and Naru is good at fighting and studying so this seemed a
good fit.
Kitsune: Kitsune is happy to find that Keitaro has made her a rogue. I
think this fits Kitsunes trickster side well. Plus, rogues can do just
about anything a thief can and whats a good D&D game without a thief?
Makoto: Our resident Kendo master is mildly pleased to have Keitaro
decide that she should be a fighter.
Su: Given her wild nature and love for tropical stuff, Keitaro chooses
to make Su a ranger. Su likes the idea a lot. Almost as much as she
likes trying to eat the dice, thinking theyre candy.
Shinobu: Since he has a hard time imagining her doing anything
physically violent, Keitaro makes Shinobu a wizard. Shinobu is a little
embarrassed that Keitaro thinks of her that highly.
Since I want this fic to be accessible to people who dont know
anything about D&D Ill be playing things very, very loose. Also Ill be
switching around were the story takes place. I.E. part of the story will
take place in the real world of the Hinata Sou, while the other half
takes place in the D&D world of the game. In addition, Keitaro is going
to start the girls off at something other than level 1 so they wont get
frustrated at having a hell a time killing anything like level 1
characters do. Im not going to go into detail in the story, but I think
about level 7 (second edition) should be a about right.
As for the campaign, Ill still working on it but I dont think
it will be anything fancy. A groups of heroes band together to find and
destroy some evil, likely a demon of some sort, thats plaguing the
land. You know, the usual. ;)
The main reason I want to do this story is that I think it could
be lot of fun. D&D has a lot of quirks and the LH cast would be a fun
way to point them out. Plus, imagining Keitaro and the girls as D&D
adventurers seems like a hoot. I also plan on using some of the other LH
characters as NPCs.
So what do you folks think?
