Heh.  All this, and you don't even invoke "mistaking
them for a villain"?  ;)

    I wanted to embrace the cliches, but not _that_ much... ~_^

Coulda been a lot shorter if you had...

    But it wouldn't have been in the spirit of either YJ or Ranma without
some comedic byplay beforehand, so... >shrugs< What'cha gonna do, eh?

 "One hundred thousand yen, eh?" Nabiki said softly to
herself, then shook her head. "Selling your own brother-in-law
for _lab experiments_? Nabiki, you ought to be ashamed of
yourself." She resolutely turned away from the wastebasket
and returned to tracking the Nikkei. Ever since the wedding
debacle she had been trying to go cold turkey on the
moneygrubbing. It wasn't good for her anymore.

 "One hundred thou-sand..." a whispery voice called from the
wastebasket.

 "I'm not listen-ing," Nabiki sang. "There are _some_ things
I won't stoop to for money."

 "One hundred thousand ye-en..." the little voice cooed.

Now THIS was really funny, I thought, as well as original.
I don't remember anyone describing a Nabiki _trying_ to reform
before, as if she were addicted.

    Well, someone may yet write a serious exploration of Nabiki the
cash-addict, but I won't be, at least in this story. (Although it would be
an intriguing premise...) It was actually one of the first scenes I
conceived of. Just popped into my head and wouldn't go away...

Glad it amused you, though. That means it worked.

As a side note to any and all who are sending in votes, I'll post a final
tally with part two next week. I'm afraid I have to set a cut-off time for
votes of 11:00 p.m. EST Sunday, so I can actually _finish_ part two in time
to post next week.
