Is it just me, or does the FFML seem a little ban-trigger happy?

-_-

(But, trust me, only the first part of this was inspired directly by
that. The rest was inspired by the first part...)

"You're getting just a *little* ticket happy," Priss complained from
the back seat of Nene's police cruiser.

"You were over the line, Priss," Nene warned, her usual happy demeanor
subsided into the professional cop facade she reserved for special
occasions. "That light went red at *least* two whole seconds before
you entered the intersection, and I was right there! People would've
filed complaints if I hadn't taken off after you...and then there'd be
an investigation, and the you-know-who might be in danger."

Priss muttered under her breath.

"What?"

"I *said*, fine. But did you have to impound my bike?"

"Rules are rules, Priss, and your license was suspended months ago. If
you'd *told* me, maybe I could've faked radio problems so I wouldn't be
notified you were driving without a license. But no, you had to play
dumb. This kind of situation has so many rules, a *boomer* could do
it."

"Hmph. Until it went bezerk, you mean."

"No, bezerk just means it gets promoted to SWAT duty." Nene looked
over her shoulder at Priss. "You know, you ran over that kid on the
scooter."

"Ask me if I care."

Nene frowned, then returned her gaze to the road ahead. "I know you
don't."

Priss raised an eyebrow. "Well, *this* is new. Since when are you so
insightful?"

"..."

Silence reigned for a full minute before Priss's macho resistance to
her discomfort wore off. "Ok, what's the deal? Did I piss you off in
some way I don't know about yet?"

"Probably. It took *me* long enough to figure it out."

Priss let her mask of indifference drop, too curious to resist.
"What?"

"Well, for starters, today *was* my day off. And since when have the
AD Police ever let me drive a cruiser, especially without backup in
the car? We're the only ones here."

"O...kay, you're starting to scare me."

"Good."

Curiosity dropped to worry. "What's going on?"

"That kid you ran over? She didn't survive. Neither did you." Priss
saw Nene's smile in the rear view mirror. "On the up side, I only have
to deliver one more criminal to justice before I retire...forever."

The phantom car drove on into a tunnel that, for the living, was not
there. A very long tunnel with a very deep exit.

"But I can give you some warning. Rules are rules, Priss. They'll be
enforced whenever you break them. Even if you break them all the time.
When you stop breaking them...if they haven't broken you first...maybe
then I'll see you again. I hope."
