Part 27 - Ranma's Kitten
There was a knock at the door. Ranma turned and thought about it.
Nabiki knocks. When she wasn't so pissed at him. Kasumi knocks
just because it wouldn't be Kasumi to NOT knock. His mother
knocked only if she thought there was a girl...Aw hell...
"Come in."
Akane poked her head into the room. Well, that was new. Ranma
went back to his computer screen and began typing again.
"Mom's almost done with dinner," she said as she shut the door
behind her, "What do you do up here all the time? I mean, I know
you work out 'cause we can hear you, but you never come down
anymore..."
Ranma finished what he was typing and turned back to her.
"It's just a hobby of mine."
"This doesn't have something to do with Nabiki, does it?"
Ranma shook his head.
"Just a little something to vent with..."
"Can I see?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I'm not done yet..."
Akane folded her arms in front of her and raised an eyebrow at
him. He smiled stupidly and she sighed.
"Whatever," she stomped to the door, "Come down for dinner."
Ranma watched her slam the door closed and turned back to his
computer. He
*liked* writing, it soothed him in a creative way that
porn just couldn't. He snickered. He read what he'd written and
decided that it was a good place to stop for dinner. Perhaps more
after dinner.

"The girl at the table last weekend..."
Mousse looked up from the bar.
"Yeah?" he said, "The one that had that meeting or whatever it
was, then left?"
"Yes, that's the one. Find out who she is and bring her to me."
"Strong arm?"
"Oh fuck no," Happosai spat, "Just ask her nicely. She knows who
I am and she'll come on her own."
"And just how do you know that?" Hinako asked from the
doorway.
Both heads swiveled at once. Hinako suppressed a sneer, even
though she knew her outfit did nothing but prevent that reaction.
The white, conservative blouse was fine, but the skirt was, well,
mini.
"Because, my luscious young tart," Happi licked his lips, "I know
FAR more than EITHER of you two doorknobs! Now, Mousse, get
going."
Mousse nodded and put his sunglasses back on.
"And what do you want me to do?" Hinako asked as she took a
seat at the bar.
"That's a loaded question, my dear," Happi passed a drink down to
her, "But I think it's time to go to Phase Two."
"Phase One didn't work?"
Happosai looked out the door at the fading form of Mousse.
"Not yet it hasn't..."

Ranma scrubbed a bit harder. Baked-on grease was indeed hard to
clean off baking dishes, though the roast was good, so he didn't
mind. It had gotten fairly cold in the last couple weeks and so the
warmth of the house, the warmth of the dishes and especially the
warmth of a good meal were very welcome.
"Ranma," his mother toned from her place at the table, "I've been
meaning to talk to you..."
"Okay..."
"It's good that you and Nabiki don't snipe at each other anymore,"
she began tentatively, "But I can't help think that it's still not over
between you two."
Ranma shrugged.
"I can't say, really..." he sighed, "I told you about the information
that she tried to blackmail me with and so far, she's refused to hand
over the negatives..."
"I know, Ranma, but she won't listen to me on this," Nodoka stood
and moved next to him, "I just don't like it when there's so much
tension in the house. And then, neither of you have come out of
your rooms much anymore. Honestly Ranma, what's a mother to
think?"
Ranma looked sidelong at her.
"I mean, you're not a pervert or anything up there, are you?"
"That depends on what you define as a pervert," Nabiki said from
the doorway behind them.
Ranma shot her a dark look, but said nothing.
"Nabiki, be nice to your brother-"
"Adopted brother," Nabiki corrected, "And he's got just as much
on me that I want handed over. Honestly mother, I don't know why
you side with him...I mean, he hasn't even lived here all his life..."
"Nabiki!"
"No, I haven't..." Ranma began to dry his hands with a towel, "I
could move out. Would that make you happy enough to quit
bugging me?"
"No Ranma," Nodoka said firmly as she stood between them,
"You're my son and you're not moving anywhere...Besides, I think
that's what Happi would want. And you, young lady...I'm sick of
this! Hand over what-"
"Not a chance."
Nabiki turned and stalked off. Nodoka sighed and slumped back
down to the kitchen chair.
"Mom," Ranma sighed as he flipped the towel over his shoulder, "I
don't know about her, but it's going to take something to get us
talking again...If ever...There's just too much between us..."
Ranma tossed the towel on the dried dishes and walked out.
Nodoka sighed. She hadn't wanted it to come to this, but it looked
like a showdown was inevitable and there was little else she could
see...Nodoka stood and made her way past the kitchen into the
sunroom. She watched as Ranma opened the back door, rake in
hand, and begun to rake the remaining leaves. Fall had come once
more. Nodoka opened the drawer at the computer and reached up
to the top, inside the drawer. She felt around and pulled at the
object there.
Fall was here once more. Time to bury the dead.
***
Akane blew into her hands. The cold had come harder than she
expected and waiting outside a place like this wasn't her idea of a
good time, but there wasn't anyplace else that she could go since
Tofu was out with Kasumi and Ryouga had been at work. She
could take care of herself, though. She smirked. And woe betide
any who tried anything with her...Especially since her boyfriend
kept poking his head out the door to make sure she was okay...
Akane blushed slightly. Ryouga had turned quite doting as a
boyfriend, which wasn't really bad. And certainly the lifting of his
depression caused him to be more sociably acceptable. She just
hoped that Ryouga wasn't going to get held up by work, since they
were going on a date with Sayuri and Ukyou that night. With what
happened last time, the two girls hadn't had a real date since
then...And Toma had interrupted their last date. Akane shivered,
but more from the thought of Toma than from the cold. What could
be done about rape that occurred
*inside* your head? How could
you prove that? Ranma showed how you could stop it if you could
get the jump on him, but even then, it wasn't foolproof...The door
opened and Ryouga stepped into the night air, shaking his head.
"You ready?" Akane asked.
He nodded sourly, which meant that he'd had to bust some heads.
Akane looked at her watch as she followed him to his bike.
"They're gonna pick us up at my place, right?" she asked.
Ryouga zipped up his jacket and nodded.
"Yeah, why?"
"Well..." she twined her fingers behind her and smiled up at him,
"We aren't due over there for another couple hours...We could head
back up to your place and fool around for a little bit..."
Her smile broadened as the implications behind her request sunk
in. Suddenly, he didn't seem so sour anymore...
***
Rakerakerake. Why the Hell can't Nabiki come out and bust her
butt raking the leaves? Why, because she's too prissy...Too damned
afraid of breaking a nail. Of course, she had no such compunction
holding back her friendship with that ten-inch purple monster.
Ranma snorted and sullenly watched his breath rise to the gray
skies above. He sighed and looked back down. There weren't even
very many leaves. Not even as many as he and Akane did a couple
weeks ago, but it had rained since then and these were wet and
mushy, like a bowl of cornflakes that sit too long. Rakerakerake...
'Myaooo...'
Ranma stopped, a frown creasing his forehead.
'Myaaaaaooo...'
Ranma looked around and a sliver of movement caught his eye at
the side of the property, near the back of the garage. A pair of
green eyes looked out at him from under the compost drum. The
drum he'd bought a few months ago to keep the compost from
stinking too much, but this little one seemed to have found a warm
spot underneath it.
'Myaoooo...'
Ranma smiled and knelt.
"Here kittykitty..." Ranma tried to call the kitten who stopped
mewling at having been spotted.
The kitten stood its ground and Ranma stood after a minute. The
kitten backed out and disappeared behind the garage and Ranma
wondered at that. He looked back to the leaves, but figured that he
could get them done some other time. He walked to the back of the
garage and shook his head at what he saw. An adult cat lay at the
back, blood congealing at its head. From the look of the creature, it
had been hit by someone from the road nearby the previous night.
But the kitten looked at least a few weeks...Ranma began to look
around and sighed again as he found them. Three of the little
kitten's siblings, dead from the cold of the night, snuggled against
each other just on the other side of the field line. The mother was
probably transferring them to the area near the vent at the back of
the garage and was hit going out for food or something...Ranma
couldn't figure it out, but the facts were clear. This little black one
with the white chin and green eyes was the only survivor.
Ranma stood and put his hands on his hips as the little one began
to mewl plaintively at his feet. Perhaps keep him until he could get
to the Humane Society in the morning? He'd freeze if he just left
him there...Ranma knelt and the little one hissed slightly as Ranma
held out his hand. He, for lack of a better pronoun, kept himself
between Ranma and his mother. Ranma smiled. Well, how could
he get the little bugger's trust? How would
*he* trust someone?
Food.
Ranma looked to the setting sun. He'd have enough time if he
hurried. He knew that Nodoka wouldn't like him abandoning the
leaves like that, but he also thought that this was worth it. Ranma
raced into the house...But what on Earth do little kittens eat?
***
His kisses had always been gentle, but Akane breathed hard at the
passion behind them this time. Apparently, he had wanted this as
much as she. He had carried her inside the house, but was suddenly
at a loss of what to do next, since it had been almost three weeks
since they'd done anything and that time, she was the instigator.
And they hadn't done anything. She wanted to do a whole lot with
him, but Ryouga turned out too much the gentleman and his
bounds too close. Akane had sighed at this. Tofu may have raised
him a little too well. She'd gotten around to being felt up which
was good, and of course the kissing was wonderful, but that's
where he'd forced himself to stop.
"Take me to your bedroom," she breathed at him as he put her
down.
Akane had been sure that he wouldn't be able to speak at her
forwardness, but had surprised her.
"You sure?"
She nodded and reached out to take his hand. She didn't know how
far he'd go this time, but she'd get more...She snickered...Bang for
her buck.
***
Figures that he'd find the old Fraley place.
Nodoka looked up at the grubby apartment that kept its grubby
place above the grubby empty business. No one would rent the
place from old Fraley because it was so run down and Fraley was
too old and poor to do anything about it, but he fought tooth and
nail anyone who tried to take it away from him, and that included
Nodoka. It had taken little time tracking down the fat bastard, and
she would have rather not have had to see him, but she couldn't
find the information she wanted without him. Genma Saotome.
Nodoka had joked to Kasumi once that they'd have the groom's
side, the bride's side and the morally bankrupt side. She had to hide
it in a joke, lest the truth scare the poor girl off. She had enough
troubles. Nodoka smiled to herself.
"And she really thinks I don't know..."
Nodoka laughed softly as she hefted the case onto the seat next to
her. She opened it and took out the gun. Even if she were forced to
defend herself, no one would think twice about gunshots from the
Fraley place. That was his first mistake. She knew that Genma had
ties to Happosai and God forbid that the little bastard was actually
there. That would be their final mistakes. Nodoka wasn't
particularly bloodthirsty, but Happi had hurt her family...And that
was something that she wouldn't stand. Nodoka adjusted the
holster under her arm and slipped a clip into the handle of the gun,
hearing a satisfying click. She drew the top piece back and made
sure the safety was on before hooking it into the holster. She'd
never learned the terminology of the gun, but she damned sure
knew how to shoot one.
She got out of the car and looked for the entrance, which she found
at the side of the building. Even Fraley's stairway was grubby. She
climbed the stair and took a breath before she knocked at the door.
And unintelligible sound came from within. She knocked again.
The door lurched open to reveal what she suspected anyway.
Genma blearily focused his eyes at her.
"Wha'?" he mumbled, "Yer nohhh pizza!"
"Genma," she began, "I came for information. Information that I
can only get from you and it's time that I knew it..."
Genma scowled at her and turned back into his apartment, but left
the door open. Nodoka closed it behind her.
***
Ukyou tugged the parking brake up as she turned the car off and
looked over at Sayuri. She hadn't been able to get the smile off the
girl's face since Ukyou picked her up. Ukyou blushed under the
attention and tried to indicate that they should at least go up to the
house. Sayuri giggled again and opened her door. Ukyou took a
deep breath and opened her door. A cold wind blew from the side
of the Saotome house. She may have worn a long coat, but nothing
could help the fact that skirts didn't cover a whole lot and her legs
were getting cold. She wore a denim skirt and a vest over her
blouse, but still didn't feel that it was enough clothing...Though she
realized that it was more clothing than she normally wore. Still
didn't feel right. Sayuri mocked her by wearing slacks and a tight,
black turtleneck, which did absolutely everything for her curves.
She also had her hair done earlier in the day into large, but tight
curls that hung loosely about her head. The whole effect drew her
into that erotic, yet innocent / naive look that turned Ukyou on.
Especially when she pouted...Oh yeah...Pouting...
Ukyou cleared her throat and followed the brunette up to the house
when a commotion came to their ears. Sayuri shot her a glance, to
which Ukyou could only shrug. They stopped at the door, but
could only hear the occasional shout from inside. It sounded like
Nabiki and Ranma, but...The shouting wasn't what Ukyou would
have considered bloodcurdling epithets of hate...Ukyou shook her
head and knocked. Some of the sounds died away and the door
opened. Sayuri stepped behind Ukyou as Nabiki looked out at
them.
"Well, if it isn't Finger-Me-Elmira and her playtoy..." she smirked
as she folded her arms across her chest.
"Go ahead and dig yer own grave...We ain't here to see you,"
Ukyou snapped.
Sayuri took gentle hold of Ukyou's arm, lest if fly toward Nabiki.
As much as she hated Nabiki, she hated violence even more.
"Well I certainly hope not," Nabiki said, "Ranma's in the kitchen
doing something incredibly stupid. And I can see he called the
lesbo squad in to help. How tasty...A threesome then?"
"Go back to fingering yourself, bitch," Ukyou rumbled at her.
"She doesn't do that anymore," Ranma called from the kitchen,
"She uses Mr. Sparky now!"
Nabiki whirled to him, her face red with rage.
"Ranma!" she shouted, "Shut up! Don't you dare!"
He smirked back at her over his shoulder, making buzzing noises.
Ukyou couldn't help but crack a smile and even Sayuri giggled.
"Oh..." Nabiki turned even redder, "Fuck you all!"
Sayuri laughed easier and wandered into the kitchen. Ranma
mumbled and grumbled, but seemed to be talking to the ball of
suds in front of him.
"Ranma...Far be it from me to judge what you do in your own
time," Ukyou said from his right side, "But, what the Hell are you
doing?"
'Myaaaaaaaaoo'
Sayuri blinked and looked to Ukyou, who reached in and scraped
off the top layer. A plaintive form of black rolled around in
Ranma's hands and the greenest eyes blinked blearily out at them.
'Myaaaaaaaoo'
"Oh, Ranma..." Sayuri gushed, "It's adorable!"
"Yeah, he's cute..." Ranma grumbled, "I was trying to wash him,
but I don't think you realize how hard it is to hold onto a kitten and
wash him at the same time..."
"Fear neotany, Ranma," Ukyou said quietly.
"Can I try?" Sayuri asked.
"Um..." Ranma pointed an elbow at her shirt, "I don't...I mean, you
look nice and he's kinda..."
"Where's that apron I saw you wearing a couple times?" Ukyou
asked.
"Oh yeah," Ranma pointed over toward the door, "Should be
hanging up. By the way Ukyou...Nice gams."
He smirked at her scowl. Sayuri pushed up her sleeves and took
the apron from the back door. She slipped it on and tied it behind
her. She put a hand on the kitten and bumped Ranma lightly out of
the way. She giggled slightly and cooed as the kitten mewed back
to her. Ranma sat at the table as he wiped his hands and shook his
head. Ukyou smiled and joined him.
"I don't get it," he said, "That kitten struggled and meowed and
scratched me in a couple places-"
"You don't have a woman's touch," Sayuri said.
Ranma and Ukyou exchanged glances at this, and Ukyou had to
keep from laughing.
"Yeah, well...So what's the occasion, you two? A date?" he asked.
"Yeah, we're supposed to meet Akane and Ryouga over here and
go out with them on a double date..." Ukyou said.
"I haven't seen'm all day," he replied, "Though, when I came back
in with dipshit there, even mom was gone, and I don't know where
she went. That was a few hours ago..."
Ranma watched as Sayuri took her time with the kitten, who
seemed to be happily purring away, making the stainless steel sink
vibrate at an odd pitch.
"I don't know," Ranma said sadly, "The kitten was the survivor of
a litter of four that froze to death. His mother was hit by a car out
on the road, probably getting food or something. I buried them all
out back. And God help me, I think I'm getting attached to it."
"It IS really cute, Ranma," Sayuri turned from the sink, "Hand me
a towel so I can dry him."
Ranma got up and laid the hand towel out on the counter and he
got another two out of the drawer. Ranma held the kitten's
haunches firmly so it wouldn't squirm while Sayuri dried it. Ranma
couldn't help but smile at the little vibrating mass under his hands.
A sober look washed over his face and Ukyou touched his
shoulder. He looked up and smiled, shaking his head.
"I think that perhaps Nabiki was getting attached too," Ranma said
quietly, "I got done feeding him and I was getting the stuff out to
wash him when he took off on me. I couldn't find him anywhere.
Then Nabiki came out of her room with the kitten cradled in her
arms. The little bugger was so dirty, I was shocked that she even
touched it, but who knows..."
Sayuri and Ukyou shared a look.
"Anyway, she was the one to help me keep him in here until I was
able to start to wash him," Ranma finished with a shrug, "Maybe
getting a pet would be a building block between us. Something to
bring her back into the family."
"Good Lord Ranma, why would you want to?" Ukyou asked.
"Ukyou, think of how hard it must be to live under this roof,"
Sayuri said, "Especially now."
"I s'pose," Ukyou sighed, "Well Ranma...Now what?"
He shrugged as Sayuri finished drying the kitten.
"I guess we can wait in the family room until Akane and Ryouga
get here," he snickered, "Knowing them, they're probably stuck in
the parking lot because Ryouga's too shy to get on the bike in front
of her."
***
"Ry-Ryouga..."
"Mmph?"
"Move your...Yeah...MUCH better..."
"Mmmrphrhph."
"NO I don't want that THERE! I may be kinky, but that's sick...Just
keep doing what you're doing..."
"Mphmph."
"Hahahaaaaohmygod!"
***
"What's wrong dear?" Nodoka asked, "Did you really think I waste
bullets on you? You're not worth it, now tell me where he is!"
Genma tried to raise himself to answer, having the sobriety mostly
beaten into him by the woman in front of him. Mostly. The fuzz
was still there, except for the times where she wrapped her gun
around his skull. That was no fun at all, really. Hell, even the DT's
were better than this. He quickly raised a hand as she raised the
gun again. She stayed her hand, but it was clear that he had to
either sober up enough to remember where that bastard was...Or lie
to her...The problem was that she might kill him if he told her the
truth and she definitely WOULD kill him if he lied to her. He
watched as Nodoka sighed and grabbed a fairly clean rag from the
countertop nearby and wiped his blood from the gun before she
replaced it in the holster. Genma looked to the small table next to
the sofa and grabbed for the bottle there. He took a swig into his
mouth, swirled it around and spit it out onto the floor, along with a
couple teeth.
"Hhhhhhhappy?"
"Am I happy?" she asked, "Not until you tell me where I can find
Soun Tendo."
"Deeeeeeead."
"No, he's not dead. He's hiding and you helped him to hide,"
Nodoka scattered newspapers over the chair next to her to sit on,
"Even going so far as to stage his death. Whose benefit was that
for, really? Yours? His? It certainly wasn't for mine as I've had to
raise his three daughters..."
Genma nodded in between ragged breaths.
"I only found out that he lived a couple years ago when he tried to
send the girls a Christmas card," she said calmly, "It had no
signature and only said 'Love' on it and it had no postmark, but I'd
know his handwriting anywhere. He has that soppy, wet script. It
was him all right. I didn't tell the girls because, until I know the
truth, there's no sense in making their lives harder than they
already are. When I find out all the facts, I'll tell them, but not
before."
"Who're ya' tryin' to convince? Me or you?"
"Genma, dear, I could shoot you in the fucking head and not only
would no jury convict me, they'd help me track down the real
killers, got it?"
He nodded, fear in his eyes.
"So please, Genma. Tell me this and I'll leave you alone. And
you'll leave me and Ranma and the girls alone and everyone'll be
happy," she said, "Except for Happi, who I think will not like
meeting Ranma."
She shrugged at that.
"I can't stop him," she continued, "You've done well to raise a man
who can stand on his own, but I think because of that, his passions
get the best of him from time to time. And this is one of those
times. But tell me. Where is Soun Tendo?"
Genma told her.
"Are you sure?"
He nodded. She sighed and looked up to the grubby ceiling.
"This is just bad on SO many levels..." she sighed, "From now on,
this side of the Saotome-Tendo family is off-limits. Period."
Genma smirked as he watched her walk out. Like anyone short of
God herself could stop Happosai. And Genma wept for his son
because he knew that Ranma was already dead.
***
Akane slid an arm across his chest and sighed contentedly at his
shoulder. Ryouga hadn't been like most guys. Most guys, when
they have a willing girlfriend, are okay enough, but stumble at
certain parts. They fumble and generally annoy the girlfriend with
their ineptness, nevermind that, had they not been inept, they
would never have gotten those same girlfriends. Ryouga hadn't
been inept. Akane's smile deepened. Ryouga had been MOST
adept. Now, she knew that he had no sexual experience with
women because he told her that she was his first. He could've been
lying, sure, but somehow she didn't think that was the case. So how
did he get so good? Watching, she supposed. It would be hard to
work where he worked and not pick up...things...
They hadn't used a...well...It was the heat of the moment thing.
Passion and all that jazz. She would be okay...she hoped...
Certainly nothing else that night could ruin the perfect moment of
bliss-
"Ryouga?" Tofu called from downstairs, "I thought you were going
out with Akane tonight?"
-except, perhaps, visitors...
***
"What d'we do now?"
Ukyou looked at Sayuri, who had taken to reclining in the Laz-E-
Boy, and shrugged.
"We've given'm two hours and we're gonna miss the nine o'clock
show anyway," Ukyou said, "I think there's a ten-thirty or maybe
an eleven if you really wanna go. I'm sorry about this, though."
Sayuri smiled and waved her off.
"It's okay," she replied, "I got to play with Ranma's new kitten
today, so that's good. And, if we don't make it to the movies
tonight, then we can go tomorrow or something. Maybe we can
just snuggle for tonight?"
"Not in this house, you don't..."
Both girls turned to the figure in the doorway. Nabiki. She smirked
at them, but lowered her gaze to Ranma, who had sacked out on
the couch, the kitten curled to a little black ball purring heavily
near the nape of his neck. Both were quite asleep. Nabiki moved to
the back of the couch and brushed the hair away from Ranma's
forehead. Ukyou was about to make a comment, but the act said
that maybe Nabiki was ready to stop being a bitch. She could only
hope. Nabiki looked up to both of them.
"Mom should be home shortly," she said, "Why don't you two take
off before then..."
She acted like she was going to say something else, but nothing
came out. The kitten awoke and turned his head up to the new
person, green eyes wide.
'Myao?'
She looked back down to the kitten and smiled a sweet, sad smile.
She reached down and gently scratched the kitten on his white
chin, making him purr even harder. She turned and walked back to
the doorway.
"Sayuri?" she half turned, "I won't need to...I won't ask you to do
anything like that again..."
Nabiki turned and rushed up the stairs.
***
"Of all the dumbass things you've ever done," Tofu grabbed the
bridge of his nose, "This just tops them all..."
"Lighten up, dear," Kasumi said, "It's not like we can throw stones,
you know."
"But I
*taught* him better than this!"
Tofu sighed and looked at the two, now fully clothed, lovers on the
couch across from him. Akane had already blushed through nine
shades of red and was working on her tenth. Ryouga had an oddly
stoic, almost angry expression on his face. Tofu ignored it.
"And I am quite sure that this is just a slip-up and that, given the
circumstances, they were as careful as they could be-"
"Kasumi!" Tofu turned to her, "How can you advocate this?! What
if Akane is now pregnant? What kind of options does she have
then?!"
Kasumi's everlasting smile dropped suddenly as she stared into her
lap.
"K-Kasumi?" Akane ventured quietly.
Kasumi brought her head back up and her smile came back into
place.
"Akane would have about the same number of options as I do."
She breathed out an unsteady breath and tried to keep smiling.
Akane frowned as she tried to digest what her sister was saying.
Ryouga tried not get it as the whole conversation just began
wrong...They could start again, couldn't they? Tofu, on the other
hand, got it. His eyes rolled into his head and the floor had a new
resident.
