Hmm, as always an idea will spawn a dozen children, often with no real
resemblance to their parent.
Still, ideas have always been my strong suit, so I hope you'll forgive
if see how they can be expanded here.
Ok, the concept of the One involves finite parallel universes and every
individual being connected to every other. And each individual holds a
certain portion of the power of alltheir other selves, which is released to
the others on their death.
One thing that could be examined is the motivation and background of the
killer. In The One, he was a renegade condemed by his fellows for his
actions. But suppose he were like the Ranma from the Quantum Destiny
universe, and was motivated by a belief that all the other universes were
flawed in ways his own was not. This sort of killer could be motivated by
patriotism as well as a desire for power. And would probably justify
himself in terms of correcting natures mistake. Indeed he might be
supported by the government of the Empire, if they knew.
And you could also do a story where the killer is some sort of destined
being, who is meant to challenge a supreme evil which they have no chance of
defeating. At least, they can't win with their own power, but can if they
gather the power of enough of their alternate selves. Someone who might
have started by trying to only kill the alternate selves who were evil or
who had made a total mess of their lives, but gradually became less
discriminating.
And of course that's assuming that there's only one assasin trying to
absorb all of themselves. There could be several, each from a different
universe.

Possibilities: There's a Ranma going around knocking off all of the
others, what does he do when he runs up against one who _started out_
faster than other people?

Ranma is contacted by the Multiverse Protection Agency who want him to act
as an enforcer
OR
Ranma has to save Akane... from Akane.
