The Batter End
Or
The Tell-Tale Okonomiyaki
Life was wonderful, Ukyou thought, skipping down the
streets of Nerima. The sun was shining, birds were singing,
Ran-chan was finally going to be hers----she hugged the large
clay pot to her breast----finally all hers.
"Beware the Jabberwock . . .the claws that bite," She
sing-songed to the pot. "the jaws that snatch. But they won't
snatch now." She smiled at the people she passed, but they
turned away, unable to bear the glow of joy on her face, she
knew. But no matter. She had the secret and the secret was in
the batter.
Chuckling a little at her accidental witticism she pried
open the edge of the pot and scooped out a dollop of the
contents.
"Mmmmmm!" *Full of creamy goodness.*
"The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! She left it dead
and with it's head she went galumphing back." Ukyou did a
little happy dance, sad that the people on the street
couldn't share in her joy.
"Snicker-snack. Snicker-snack!" Poor sad little people.
They didn't understand. They didn't
_know_. But she did. She
knew. She----
"Uuuu . . .kyyy. . .ouuuu"
No! She stared at the pot in horror. She was imagining
things.
"Uuuuu . . .kyyyy . . .ouuuu"
"Snicker-snack. Snicker-snack". She clasped her
spatula for reassurance. On little cat feet. In the shadows. It was
all over quickly.
"Uuuuu . . .kyyyy . . .ouuuu. Sssstoooop!"
Stop? She couldn't stop. The batter, her precious
special batter that would make Ran-chan love her forever. She
started to run.
"Sssstooooppp Uuuukyyyoouuu"
Run. Run. Run. She'd be safe when she got to her shop.
She'd cook the batter all up. She'd cook it up. *Yum, yum, eat
it up. Yum, yum eat it up. Eat it all up.*
"Sssstoooppp"
*Eat it up. Yum, yum. Eat it up.*
Panting and sobbing she ran through the streets, trying
to outrun the voice. *Eat it up. Eat it up.*
"Ukyou! Stop!"
"NO!" Ukyou whirled in fright as a hand came down
on her shoulder.
"Why . . .why didn't you stop when I called?" Akane
bent over, gasping.
"You! It can't be----" The okonomiyaki chef looked at
her rival in horror. *Yum, yum. Eat it up. Eat it up.*
"Huh?" Akane tried to straighten up, pressing against a
stitch in her side. "Listen, I wanted to know if you've seen
Ranma."
"Ran-chan?"
"Yeah, the baka went cruising for ice-cream and he
borrowed the dress I was going to wear to a party tonight."
"Ran-chan?"
*Eat it up.*
She looked at the pot in her arms in horror.
"Ran-chan . . ."
*Eat it up.*
"Ran-chan . . ."
*Yum.*
"Ran . . ."
*Yum*
"chan . . ."
*Eat it up.*
Flinging the pot away she fled.
*Yum, Yum. Eat it up. Eat it all up.*
"What's up with her?"
"Ranma!" Akane turned to her iinazuke in anger as he
hopped down from a roof. "Where have you been? I've been
looking for you all day! And where's my dress?" She stared at
the pants and tank-top he was wearing.
"Ahhh . . .I spilled ice-cream on it. But it's OK," he
explained hastily. "I ran into Tsubassa and he was wearing an
identical one he said I could borrow."
"Well?" Akane tapped her foot. "Where is it?"
"Dunno," Ranma confessed. "He was going to change
and meet me later, but he never showed up."
"Sorry I'm late," Tsubass popped around the corner,
panting slightly, "but I ran into Shan Pu on the way to meet
you. She'd been splashed while making a delivery and treed by
a dog."
"Where's the dress?" Ranma said anxiously.
"She lost all her clothes, so I lent her that dress and had
to go back for another." He held out the garment for Akane's
approval.
"This is great," Akane enthused, "You've got
wonderful taste."
"It's a gift," Tsubassa admitted modestly. "I'd like to
stay, but I'm trying to track Shan Pu down and get that dress
back. It's one of my favorites."
THE END???

I apologized to the many people who have e-mailed me an not
yet received an answer. Due to several Real Life interruptions,
(the worst of which was a Histoplasmosis infection which
caused bleeding in the retina of my wife's eye Fortunately she
seems to be responding to medication, but we were a little
worried. (actually I was a basket case, she's made of much
sterner stuff. ^_O)) I've fallen very far behind and it's doesn't
look like it's going to get better anytime soon. I'll do the best I
can, but answering e-mail, writing and C&Cing is going to be
rather sporadic.
General Updates:
Bedlam Fire: working out a transition problem between the
opening scene and the rest of the story. It's always the little
things that cause the most problems.
Sukeban Senshi: NO, I have not abandoned the story. It's just
the most complicated thing I'm writing and is slow going.
Chapter 8 is still in revision, but I've actually done a bit of
work on chp. 9 & 10. Not much, but a bit.
Two Experimental pieces:
Heaven's Mirror
and
Reflections
(working titles, subject to change)
Mirror is up on D-chan's site (what there is of it)
and Reflections is finished up to chapter 17 (about 200KB
.TXT) but NOT posted.
They are experimental in the sense that I'm avoiding (or trying
to avoid) explosions, destruction and death that have
characterized many of my previous works while still producing
a good read. I abandoned Mirror for a while after my pre-
reader panned it, but several people have visited the site and
requested I continue, which I will.
No one has seen Reflections (which was written to address
problems with Mirror) It's a VERY different story, though it
springs from the same basic idea (think of my Cherry Blossom
and Tea and Shadows, which also came from the same basic
idea) I've had fun with it so far, and, Real Life willing, will
finish it in the next few weeks.
Tyger, Tyger: chp. 1-3 finished and posted to the site. Chapter
4 (which should be the end) is in the works. I've gotten a few
scenes roughed out and am hopeful of finishing in the near
future.
Beyond the Glass: A sailor moon short story, which is actually
an off shoot of a sailor moon novel-length work that I
abandoned when I lost my collaborator. Roughed out.
I'll post short pieces like this as the muse strikes me, but I'm
not going to put out any more unfinished stuff. (I hope)
Otherwise I'll lose control and flood the place with fragments,
but no finished stories.
So . . .Bedlam Fire and Sukeban Senshi have top priority.
I'll try to C&C as much as possible as quickly as possible, but
I'm afraid I'm going to be rather slow. Thank you for your
patience.
