This is a little something that's been percolating around in my head for a while. I blame DB Sommer. (I blame poor DB for lotsa stuff. I shall henceforth refer to him as "Sin-Eater" sommers. Makes him sound like a pro-rassler.) See, he wrote one of his infamous "Fusions That Should Never Be" about an EVA/SM fusion, and it got me to thinking _how_ something like that _could_ be pulled off reasonably well. This is where I hit the snag: I have WAY too many fics on the go right now to tackle another one, not to mention a promotion that requires me to actually do WORK while at work instead of abusing my workstation to write fanfic, NOt to mention suddenly gaining an eight-year-old daughter. An amazingly ACTIVE eight-year-old daughter...

     So, how to demonstrate my idea of how an EVA/SM fusion could be done, without taking up too much time?

    Here it is.

    If you're a member of a certain generation, you can't help but feel a little thrill of nostalgia when you hear the refrain of "Moonlight Tenshi" - the stirring, almost military cadence of the opening bars blending with the sweeping symphonic tones of the main melody. Your mind's eye can't help but flash back to that childhood excitement we all felt every Saturday morning as our heroes charged into battle to save the world from Evil Lord Keele and his DarkSoul Angels. We get ready to cheer when Evangelia White strikes the final blow with her mighty Twin Heartache Spear, or cry when poor, painfully shy Rei Tsukino fails once again to catch the eye of class brain Shinji Umino. Or maybe, if we're really lucky, the threat to Planet Earth will be great enough that the Evangelia Team will have to join forces and launch their secret weapon, the robotic Mighty Evangelion! Who amongst us didn't have an official membership card from the Rei Tsukino Fanclub? Who didn't, at one time, festoon their bedrooms with Evangelia merchandise- A plush Talking Pen-Pen with Sardine-Swallowing Action by your pillow, The rare Seraphic Kamen UFO doll hanging from your desk lamp? Who amongst us didn't wait with baited breath by the news-stand for the latest issue of Naoko Sakamoto's wonderful manga adaptation to hit the shelves?

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia was more than just another anime; it was a world-wide pop-culture phenomenon. For the first time, an anime show was a hit not only on our own shores, but across the globe as well. From Alaska to Zaire, from America to Zimbabwe, girl and boys, the young and young-at-heart dreamed of suiting up and sallying forth to battle evil alongside their heroes. While other cultural exports had developed cult followings abroad in the latter half of the Twentieth Century, (the kaijuu classics Godzilla and Gamera, the video and trading card game craze Pokemon, amongst others,) no Japanese show before or since has ever been embraced by the foreign public as readily as Evangelia.

    Why was Evangelia such a hit? Was it the characters, the mecha, the situations? The formula has been recycled, again and again by various studios, with varying degrees of quality and success, but nothing so far has even come close. Why Evangelia was so popular for so long while other once-popular shows like Gunsmith BeBop, DragonBall 1/2, Clamp Card Detectives or Ruroni Trigun have fallen by the wayside is beyond the scope of this work. This author can only surmise that a little bit of Neo-Angel Queen Lilith's magic must've seeped through the screen and touched us all.

SYNOPSIS:

    Once apon a time, in another dimension, a dimension filled with beings of light called Angels who existed to bring love and happiness to humans, the Angelic Queen Yui ruled the peaceful Angelic Eden Kingdom. She fell in love with the Seraphic Knight, the king of a neighbouring kingdom, and the two were to be wed.

    Unbeknownst to the blissful monarch, the queen's vizier, Lord Keele, wanted the queen for himself. When she rejected him, he went mad, and summoned the Throne of Souls, a power of great spiritual evil, to grant him revenge. He got his wish, and the Angelic Eden Kingdom was destroyed, and Angelic Queen Yui was slain. But before Keele could kill her suitor, the Seraphic Knight used the Holy Relic of the Angelic Eden Kingdom, the Twin Heartache Spear, to open a gateway to Earth and escaped with the Queen's body, sealing the way behind himself.

    Enraged, Lord Keele used his power to corrupt the peaceful inhabitants of the Eden Kingdom into creatures he called DarkSoul Angels, being who could survive only off the pain and terror of humans, and sought to pierce the seal between dimensions, an effort that would take decades.

    Meanwhile, on Earth, the grief-stricken Seraphic Knight hid away the Twin Heartache Spear by shattering it into seventeen "Adam Crystals" that concealed themselves inside the souls of pure-hearted humans, including a priest, a minister, a painter, a penguin, and a young psychic named Maya Urawa. The Knight, distraught, disguised himself as a human and took the name Gendo Ikari. Using magic disguised as science he founded a multinational  humanitarian organisation he named the NERV (New Eden Revival Venture) Foundation, and dedicated his every waking moment to trying to bring back his lost love, eventually succeeding in creating a perfect clone of the lost queen. Sadly, though the clone possessed the late queen's heritage and potential for power, she had no memories, and could not love the old man he had become. He dubbed her Rei, meaning "zero", or "nothing", since she remembered nothing of her past life. Saddened, he cloned himself and named the clone "Shinji" for "Shin", or "new". The two clones were raised separately by volunteer foster families, while Gendo eventually passed away of a broken heart. Before he died, he managed to release the magic of the dead queen across the Earth, where it would be reborn inside four chosen girls of noble heart and pure spirit, who would protect the Princess as her Host.

When the clones matured to the age of fifteen, their powers began to awaken, and across the dimensional divide, Evil Lord Keele took notice. He began sending his DarkSoul Angels to destroy his hated foes. But NERV had been preparing for this day and, after first activating their test-type Codenamed: Unit One, Misato Aino, later Evangelion Purple. With the assitance of a mysterious hero called Tuxedo Kaji and the help of genetically-engineered intelligent talking penguin Pen-Pen. Another of their agents, a  penguin named Gwen was sent to awaken Rei to her power. Within months, the entire Evangelia Team was activated and supplied with their Magical Armour and weapons, and with the occasional and always timely asisstance of Tuxedo Kaji and the mysterious hero Seraphic Kamen, they managed to keep defeating Lord Keele's DarkSoul Angels whenever they appeared.

When his agents began to fail with alarming regularity, Keele began to search for the Adam Crystals, hoping their power added to his own would be enough to allow him to send an entire invasion force through to Earth, instead of just one minion at a time. With the help of a temporarily corrupted Seraphic Kamen, he managed to assemble them all- only to be unable to use them without a pure heart. When Team Evangelia came to rescue Seraphic Kamen, Evangelia White managed to recombine the Adam Crystals into the Twin Heartache Spear and seal Lord Keele back into his own dimension for a time.

It took Keele only six months to pierce the barrier this time, and he resumed his attacks, sending deadlier and deadlier monsters until finally the Evangelia Team decided to face him in final battle. With the help of the Mighty Evangelion robot, they were able to defeat Lord Keele's Thirteen White Demons and apparently destroy Lord Keele once and for all.

Of course, Keele returned next season, and every season thereafter, for the next nine years...

Various other characters drifted in and out of the spotlight over the next eight seasons: Chibi-Rei, (Evangelia Pink) the daughter of Neo-Angel Queen Lilith and Seraphic Knight from the future appeared in seasons three, four and nine; The spirit of Angelic Queen Yui made several appearances in season five, where the Evangelia Team finally learned the full details of their origins. Shigeru Aoba, Toji Hyuuga and Maya Urawa, the inveterate bridge bunnies of NERV HQ, made their brief heroic debut as the Three Lights in season six before losing their powers to a DarkAngel death ray. One constant was Kensuke Osaka, a bespectacled classmate of Rei and Shinji's who acted as their go-between in the early seasons and was often paired up with Hikari in fan speculation and dojinshi, was killed in the sixth movie, and was greatly mourned by the characters and the fan community.


THE MOVIES:

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia The Movie: The Evangelia Team battles against the menace of Kaoret and his interstellar monsters, the Vegetates.

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia The Movie II: Death and Rebirth: Rei discovers her destiny to rule the Earth Eden Kingdom in the 31st Century as monsters from the future attack.
    
    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia: Big Trouble In Tokyo-3:  More comedic in tone than any of the other movies, an experiment gone awry mixes "Evil DNA" with Professor Fuyutsuki's and the Team must defeat the evil genius who has taken over NERV headquarters with his army of Animates.

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia In Love: Definitely shojo-themed, as the relationships between Rei and Shinji, Misato and Kaji, and Ritsuko and Maya are explored in depth against the backdrop of a siege by a hostile government and their Jet-Alone robots.

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia: Angelic Dreamer: Shinji is trapped inside his own subconscious, and the Evangelia Team must get him out, while defeating the Nightmare Pharaoh in the process.

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia Forever: When Rei and Shinji's friend Kensuke Osaka is killed by a terrorist attack, Rei quits the Evangelia Team! Will her friends manage to convince her that humanity is worth fighting for before a monster destroys Tokyo-3?

    Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia: Farewell to Evangelia: The final battle with Dark Lord Keele as the Evil warlord sets off Third Impact, reducing all of humanity to LCL! Will Rei and Shinji manage to reverse the catastrophe and fulfil the prophecy of Instrumentality?


CAST OF CHARACTERS:

The Heroes:

Rei  Tsukino (Evangelia White) A shy, sweet-tempered girl. A little klutzy, but kind hearted to a fault. During Season One, she is too shy to approach her crush, Shinji Umino (who is, unbeknownst to the rest of the cast, the clone of the late philanthropist and head of the NERV Foundation, Gendo Ikari, and also the Heroic Seraphic Kamen). By the end of the first season, his identity stands revealed and the two begin the longest courtship in animation history.
       
    With the magic words "Moon Armour Power, Launch!", Rei transforms into Evangelia White, leader of the Evangelia Team. In times of extreme peril, she can also transform into Angelic Princess Lilith, since she is a clone of the benevolent Angelic Queen Yui, deceased ruler of the dimension now controlled by Dark Lord Keele and his DarkSoul Angels. It was revealed in Season Three that in the 31st century, Rei is Queen of the Crystal Eden Kingdom, and is known as Neo-Angel Queen Lilith. She rules alongside the Heroic Seraphic Knight, the former Seraphic Kamen.

    Evangelia White's powers, unlike the rest of the Evangelia Team, do not seem to be internalised in her armour; instead, she relies upon her Twin Heartache Spear, a magical artefact given to her by her guardian penguin Gwendolyn. The Spear can grow to titanic size and be used as a hand-to-hand weapon by the robot Mighty Evangelion, but is most often used as a focus for Evangelia White's energy blasts. Depending on the season, these have various names and effects (detailed in appendix A) such as "Heavenly Light Purification",  "Moon Soul Protection", etc.

Asuka Hino (Evangelia Red) Passionate and fiery-tempered, Asuka is aloof and defensive, and initially thinks that she should replace Evangelia White as leader of the Evangelia Team. However, her gruff manner hides a valiant and loving heart, and she eventually becomes Rei's closest friend and staunchest defender. While she is always calling him "hentai" or "baka", she cares deeply for NERV technician Yuuchiro Hyuuga, and initially has a crush on the mysterious Tuxedo Kaji, before his true identity as Misato's (Evangelion Purple) fianc�, superspy Kaji Chiba is revealed.

    When she says the magic words "Fire Armour Power, Launch!", Asuka becomes Evangelia Red. Her primary weapon is her "Progressive Flame", replaced in later seasons with "Progressive Fire Banishment" and "Progressive Blazing Arrow".

Hikari Kino (Evangelion Green) is a kind and caring girl who hides behind her tough front as the Class Rep for her High School homeroom. She enjoys cooking for her friends in after her introduction in Season One takes it upon herself to fix bentos every morning for her team-mates. She is forever comparing cute boys to her "old Incho" but has no steady love interest herself over the course of the series.

    With the words "Earth Armour Power, Launch!" Hikari becomes Evangelia Green. Her primary weapons are the extendable arms of her armour, as well as her titanic strength; of all the Evangelion Teams' suits, hers is physically the strongest.

Misato Aino (Evangelia Purple) Originally the star of the OVA series "Codename: Unit One", featuring her solo adventures fighting crime and monsters alongside Tuxedo Kaji and her guardian penguin Pen-Pen. Misato is a bubbly, slightly goofy character who fancies herself the "Captain of Love". Although a year or two older than all the other girls with the exception of Ritsuko (Evangelion Blue), she frequently outdoes them when acting silly and childish is concerned. Nevertheless, she is a staunch fighter and compassionate friend. Her cooking is legendarily awful, and she has been engaged to dashing superspy Kaji Chiba (Tuxedo Kaji) since childhood.

    To become Evangelia Purple, Misato says "Love Armour Power, Launch!". Her primary attack is the "Burning Heart Particle Beam", which becomes upgraded in later seasons to "Love-Love Halo, Encircle" and "Lovely Beery Shock".

Ritsuko Mizuno (Evangelia Blue) A brilliant student and genius, Ritsuko is the analytical and logical part of the team. While not as open about her emotions as the other girls, she nevertheless cares deeply for her team-mates, even though she sometimes rolls her eyes at their childishness. She has strong feelings for the young psychic Maya Urawa, (introduced in Season One as one of the carriers of the Adam Crystals) who refers to her as "sempai". Both parties are very shy about admitting their feelings, but in the fourth movie (Magical Armour Princess Evangelia In Love) they admit their feelings for each other and share their first kiss, an event eagerly awaited by long-time fans.

    When she says the words "Water Armour Power, Launch!", Ritsuko becomes Evangelia Blue. Her attacks are not as powerful as those of her team-mates, ("Dead Sea Spray", "Iceberg Blast" and "Oceanic Illusion") but she frequently uses her "Pocket MAGI", a powerful supercomputer disguised as a makeup compact, to pinpoint weaknesses of the team's foes and plan strategies.

Kaji Chiba (Tuxedo Kaji) Devastatingly handsome, brave, and perpetually unshaven, Kaji is a debonair superspy for the NERV Foundation cast in the same mold as James Bond. A big brother figure for most of the Evangelia Team, he has a special place in his heart for his fianc�e Misato. His dashing, rugged good looks and roguish charm made him the series heartthrob of choice for many fangirls.

    As Tuxedo Kaji, he went into battle dressed in a classic tux-and-cape combo and hi-tech visor that somehow concealed his identity despite his give-away nom-de-guerre. As weapons, he used various gadgets and gizmos constructed by NERV's Technical Development Department headed by the irascible but grandfatherly Dr. Kozo Fuyutsuki.

Shinji Umino (Seraphic Kamen) Shy and almost as withdrawn as Rei, Shinji is the clone of deceased NERV founder, the benevolent philanthropist Gendo Ikari. Ordinarily an overly-intelligent, awkward boy, in times of stress he becomes a fierce fighter for the forces of justice. He and Rei are deeply in love, but are so awkward about expressing their feelings that they barely even hold hands until the seventh and final movie, "Magical Armour Princess Evangelia: Farewell to Evangelia", released in 2039 to cap off the franchise, where they share a passionate kiss before Third Impact occurs.

    As Seraphic Kamen, Shinji wore shining silver body armour based loosely on the armour worn by the Evangelia Team. He could fly using his nine energy wings and fought with his mighty Progressive Sword. His transformation was never seen on-screen, he simply appeared when needed. Despite his awesome powers, he rarely did more to assist the Evangelia Team than briefly distract the monster-of-the-week, allowing Evangelion White to execute her final attack. During Season Three, he briefly piloted a robot codenamed Golden Eve that could combine with the Mighty Evangelion robot to form Mighty Golden Evangelion.

The Villains:


Evil Lord Keele: (TV Series,Movie "Magical Princess Evangelia: Farewell to Evangelia") Lord Keele was the master villain for all nine seasons of Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia, as well as the principle antagonist in the final movie. "Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia Forever". A powerful wizard from the Dimension of Angels, he and his lieutenants, the Throne of Souls, were responsible for every "monster-of-the-week" faced by the Evangelia Team. While in the anime his motives are rarely explored beyond evil-for-evil's sake, he is given a full origin in the manga adaptation by Naoko Sadamoto that is accepted as canon by most fans. Briefly, he was the Chief Advisor of Angelic Queen Yui in the days of the Angelic Eden Kingdom, and fell in love with the beautiful monarch. Unfortunately for him, she had already agreed to marry the Seraphic Knight, king of a nearby realm. Enraged with jealousy, he turned to dark magic and gained awesome power, which he used to destroy or corrupt those who opposed him into DarkSoul Angels. In a jealous rage, he destroyed Queen Yui and banished the Seraphic Knight to another dimension (Earth) with her lifeless corpse. When the clones of his two ancient foes reached maturity on Earth, the Throne of Souls detected their re-emergence and began sending DarkSoul Angels across the dimensional barrier to destroy them and steal the life force of humans in mortal terror, by means of their horrible Absolute Terror Fields.

Kaoret: (Movie "Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia The Movie") Kaoret was a clone of Shinji (Seraphic Kamen) mixed with human DNA that was created as a companion for the young boy during his childhood. Unfortunately, the combination of human and Angelic DNA eventually drove Kaoret insane, and, unable to destroy him, NERV shot him into space aboard an experimental rocket. Shinji's memories of Kaoret's existence were erased, so that he wouldn't be traumatised.

    In deep space, Kaoret encountered an alien parasitic lifeform that resembled a flower, which took over his addled mind. Returning to earth, Kaoret set loose gigantic plantlike Vegetates that began to lay waste the world, and the Evangelion Team went into space to destroy them. The Vegetates proved too much for even the Mighty Evangelion to handle, and in the end it fell to Angelic Princess Lilith to destroy the alien parasite and cure Kaoret's madness with the Twin Heartache Spear and a "Heavenly Light Purification". Kaoret was cured of his insanity, but was already mortally wounded from the battle. In a dying gesture of atonement, he kissed Shinji and returned his memories, and was forgiven before he died.

The Serpent Queen: (Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia The Movie II: Death and Rebirth) A being of evil from the 31st Century, she wishes to destroy Angelic Princess Lilith and her court before they can fulfil the prophecy of Instrumentality and bring about the Earth Eden Kingdom in the 31st Century. Her attack in the present led the Evangelion Team into the future, where they met their future selves and helped them defeat the menace of the Serpent Queen and her minions, the Red Earth Family.

Professor Fuyutsuki: (Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia: Big Trouble in Tokyo-3) When Fuyutsuki is contaminated by "Evil DNA", the benevolent genius becomes a power-hungry madman who infuses experimental battle robots with artificial life. Dubbing them his "Animates", he goes on a rampage, chewing on the scenery until Evangelia White purifies him with the Twin Heartache Spear, ending his career as a supervillain. In that guise, he often petted an evil robot cat he called "Bigglesworth-san", who escaped the final battle, perhaps to menace our heroes once again...

General Thompson: (Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia In Love) The leader of a rogue nation's military, he led his forces, armed with Jet-Alone robots, to attack NERV HQ. Eminently forgettable villain patterned on every American military stereotype in history; which is fine, since his attack was only supposed to be a subplot, anyway.

The Nightmare Pharaoh: (Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia: Angelic Dreamer) An evil astral being who attempted to take over Seraphic Kamen's mind via his subconscious fears. Alone amongst the Evangelia villains, he used no minions of his own, instead animating Shinji's subconscious fears and personal demons (permitting the use of much stock footage). While unimpressive from a technical standpoint, this movie was one of the more cerebral of the seven.

Hikaru Nakamura: (Magical Armoured Princess Evangelia Forever) A mad-bomber type who wants the NERV organisation destroyed, he begins by bombing Marduk High School, killing Kensuke Osaka and injuring countless other students. More of a catalyst to the story than an actual villain. He eventually finds a device in the top secret "Terminal Dogma" section of NERV HQ while searching for a place to set explosives that turns him into a giant monster, necessitating his defeat at the hands of Mighty Evangelion, in only his second movie appearance.
