He taught HIMSELF? Reminds me of a Heinlien story about a
time-travelling sex-changer. He ends up (rot13) being his own father
AND his own mother, bringing himself up by his bootstraps, as it were.

Heinlien wasn't as good as Takahashi, though.

Well, he had less martial arts in his stories, for a start. :)

Heinlein did two time-travel stories on that kind of theme, actually:
"By His Bootstraps" and "All You Zombies".  Both generally regarded as
classics.  And David Gerrold did an even more complex one: "The Man Who
Folded Himself".  Also worth checking out, if you haven't read it.

I don't recognize where the woman he saved in the battle came from,
though.

Mrs Tendo.  She got struck on the head in mid-battle, and left for dead.
