Ummm..... Actually Akane isn't afraid of swimming. In all of the manga's that I've seen,
she's been bound and determined to learn how to swim, jump in, and start sinking. Of
course when she gets out, she just jumps right back in, not afraid, trying to learn. Of
course, she also isn't that stupid, because she knows that she can't swim. And then of
course, the pure joy she shows on her face when she figures out that blowing all of the
air out of her lungs so that she can rise to the top allows her to swim. Well sorta. But
no, Akane is not afraid to swim. No hesitation, no doubts, she just jumps and says she's
going to swim. If she was afraid, she would hesitate, try to make up an excuse to not
swim, but she doesn't. I don't know, maybe she is afraid, and that her fear is all
subconscience, but I still wouldn't buy it, especially with her strong desire/stubbornness
to swim.

Now, Nadesico, has it occured to you that Akane might actually be *afraid*
of trying to swim? Fear can make you do funny things, such as lose all
objective rationality when it comes to otherwise common sense actions (such
as trying to breathe water). Such a problem would only be made worse if she
was also a tad more dense than normal. Add the idiotic ways in which she has
been 'helped' with swimming in the past, and her refusal to learn from one
of the few people who could teach her properly without risking being drowned
by a paniking Akane (Ranma), and it's really a wonder she can get as close
to the edge of the pool as she does without cringing in terror...
