Ummm..... Actually Akane isn't afraid of swimming.
In all of the manga's that I've seen,
she's been bound and determined to learn how to
swim, jump in, and start sinking. Of
course when she gets out, she just jumps right back
in, not afraid, trying to learn. Of
course, she also isn't that stupid, because she
knows that she can't swim. And then of
course, the pure joy she shows on her face when she
figures out that blowing all of the
air out of her lungs so that she can rise to the top
allows her to swim. Well sorta. But
no, Akane is not afraid to swim. No hesitation, no
doubts, she just jumps and says she's
going to swim. If she was afraid, she would
hesitate, try to make up an excuse to not
swim, but she doesn't. I don't know, maybe she is
afraid, and that her fear is all
subconscience, but I still wouldn't buy it,
especially with her strong desire/stubbornness
to swim.

Yeah, but she sabotages her chances tremendously well.
I think the fear idea works. Some people fling
themselves headfirst into whatever they're afraid
simply for the fact that they're afraid of it.
They'll do tremendously dangerous and stupid things
just to prove to themselves that they can handle it.
People that are considered to be afraid of failure
tend to not try too hard, because they're afraid that
they'll fail even if they try their hardest, but if
they slack off then they can claim they just didn't
feel like trying it.
Fear unchecked is a strange thing.
