A fine way to do this in future ocasions might be writing all the explanations in a separate text, and label it "background material". The actual mechanics behind the moves would be explained in this file, and only lightly touched upon in the story itself. It's common practice for famous published histories (Wheel of Time, Discworld, etc.), which tend to have lots of "resource books" explaining the characteristics of the world that aren't shown in the stories.
It also has a couple of added bonuses. Other writers who want to use the same mechanics in their stories can find all the rules in one place, and perhaps expand upon them. Also, readers will already expect to find detailed explanations in that document, so you won't get as much negative reactions from them :).
