The note about Amatsumara being portrayed as a Cyclops is startling. It
coincides numerous Mediterranean traditions concerning smiths. They were
invariably hamstrung, and all of them bore a tattooed circle on their
foreheads. Robert Graves had some interesting things to say about all this
in his writings. For those who have not read any of Graves's work, I
strongly suggest you do so. The web is inadequate to the task of clearing
these things up.
