Well, here's the second installment. As always C&C is welcome as well as
anybody who wants to take up another character. Also, can somebody clue me
in if this disclaimer sounds off? I grabbed it off the inside cover of the
manga and I'm not sure I got it right.

"I refuse to see why you're obsessing over this! In a few more hours
we're going to be part of a battle that could determine the fate of
mankind!"
"Correction, MOST of us are, I'VE already done my part."
"Feh. Done with your typical 'jump first, think never' philosophy."
"Got it done, didn't I?"
"Fang nearly killed you, Hilde nearly killed you, couldn't you have
bothered to come up with something a bit more subtle?"
"Couldn't have gotten done in time. Everything we do brings one person
back from this stupid war alive instead of dead. What about all the stupid
stuff you've done to help the Gundam pilots out? Smuggling Sally and Altron
out of China? Salvaging Wing and Sandrock right under Romafeller's
collective noses? What about..."
"Enough! Point taken!"
"Fine, Let's get back to my original point. Have you ever wondered
about Quatre's question?"
"Not this again..."
"Come on, doesn't being a second fiddle bug you?
"Don't you dare call me that! You know damn well all of my
accomplishments in this! I've done just as much and fought just as hard as
anybody on this ship!"
"Except for the girls."
"..."
"What would be different if you were a Gundam pilot instead of one of
the others?"
"...Yes. I've wondered about it briefly. In fact, I discussed the
matter with Heero. He gave me an interesting answer. He claimed we aren't
suited for it. He shuddered at the thought of being responsible for the
Zero and claimed a pacifist was the only personality that could tame it. He
thought Zechs didn't have the competitive streak needed for the
Tallgeese..."
"...And we know damn well what Noin did with that streak and what she
wants to do with it."
"I, however, disagreed with him and Quatre's musings. I don't envy the
Gundam pilots."
"Bull..."
"Don't get me wrong, Duo. You were accurate with your jibe. I do wish
I could do more. These past few months I have indeed wondered what my life
would be like if I had chosen the path of the warrior instead of the
scholar. Unlike Heero, I feel we would have found the strength and
fortitude to do the job. I just don't like the idea of what would have
happened once we got there."
"Can you run that by me again?"
*Sigh* "Look at what the girls have gone through in the past months.
Relena has to face the fact that she inadvertently murdered the ESA's only
pacifists and paved the way OZ's rise to power. Sally had her entire home
village wiped out after she hid there. Catherine lost her original family
in the previous war and lost the circus that took her in in this one. The
only thing she's got left is Trowa and he's not much more stable than her.
I don't think Dorothy ever really recovered from her time with the Zero.
Hilde...well she calls herself the Goddess of Death, which makes me wonder
what was happening to her before we met her.
"Ok. They've all lost a lot and I'll be the first to admit that Hilde
has serious issues, but I don't see your point! Heck we've all got
problems! We've all lost things we cherished getting involved in this."
"Yes, but think about this. Would you have been prepared to lose even
more? These things weren't inscribed in stone, Duo. They happened as a
direct result of them climbing into those cockpits. What would your life be
like if you were tapped for the Deathscythe? Me? I've already lost the
woman I loved. It hurts every single day. I hate to think of what Sally
goes through knowing her entire village was wiped out just because she tried
to hide the Shenlong there for repairs."
*Sigh*"You've got a point there. A damn good point. A much as I love
Hilde, I'd never trade her for the crap that's gone down in her life. Not
for nuthin'. She's paid way too much for having a starring role in all this
crap... what's that alarm for?"
"General quarters. The battle must be starting."
"Heh. Well then, help me get to the bridge, Wufei. We've got some
friends to pray for and some sidelines to sit on and I wouldn't trade places
with anybody out there for the world."
