Chibi means runt, you know.

Of course you know. That's why you call her that. No doubt you think it's a
cute little putdown that the stupid infant who speaks your barbarous tongue as
a second language, at best, can't possibly understand.

It's actually kind of appropriate. I mean, by our time, you've had about a
hundred official consorts and heaven only knows how many cheap fucks; dropped a
kid almost every year, like clockwork. So I suppose there's nothing really
special about this particular royal brat, lost on the winds of time.

Oh yes, silly me to forget that special something.

She's everything you're not, everything that I'm now coming to realize that you
never were. Sweet, innocent, kind ... a genuine child. Worthy of the term
princess without all the negative connotations your era puts on it.

But I suppose a lot of your children start out that way, so that's not really
special. They get used up so soon, though. I suppose I can't blame the world
for needing heroes, for buying into your propaganda and calling on your kids to
protect them. All the mourners at all the funerals certainly seem sincere.

Except you, of course.

I'll protect her. I swear, by whatever bastard God spat the lot of us out on
the cosmos, that I will guard this child. She is not going to end up used up on
some hero act, or turned into the same cynical monster you are.

And now you realize that I'm looking at you oddly, and your brow furrows.
"What're you lookin' at, Diana?"

"Nothing, Usagi-sama," I say, honestly.

Because that's what you are. Or what you will be, one day, when the mob finally
realizes that you're not some sort of naive Queen who doesn't understand that
they can't have cake if they don't have bread; that you really don't give a
damn if they eat at all.

They're going to rise up and cast you off like an over-used towel, your
Majesty, and when they do, I'm going to be there with your runt of a daughter
to fill your crystal shoes better than you could even have dreamed.

Hold on, Small Lady. Just hold on.
