Reunions and Tragedies
CHAPTER VIII
Knight to Queen's Bishop 4
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
"If you walk out on me...
I'm walking after you..."
- Foo Fighters
"Walking After You"
The Fire Knight was indeed a worthy opponent. The deep
gash on his back was a painful testament to her skill. It
took a while for him to regain the upper hand - maneuvering
the unsuspecting Knight into a corner made by a huge boulder
and the solid rock face of a cliff. She barely had enough
room to move around his next assault.
This time, he would be the one to draw blood. Victory
was at hand.
Or so he thought.
A sudden flash of raw energy cleaved through the
darkness. It engulfed him in a white-hot flame, the heat
searing the very skin off of his bones...
He heard himself scream.
"... wake up. Lord Innova, you must wake up."
His golden eyes shot open. He could hear his heartbeat
hammering like a maddened thing against his chest. Each
breath he took was sheer agony. His entire back was a
seething mass of pain.
_Good. That means I'm still alive to feel it._
"Here, drink this." He felt someone lift his head and
press a goblet against his cracked lips.
The cool water was a welcome relief against his parched
throat. Such a small effort seemed to sap all of his meager
strength.
"Ferio..." Innova winced at the sound of his own voice.
He cleared his throat and continued in a hoarse whisper, "The
Pillar must be told of this. The man who did this to me - he
could prove to be a very dangerous adversary. More dangerous
than the Knights."
Innova noticed Ferio's apprehensive glance towards the
far end of the room. Innova turned his head and was very much
surprised to see the Pillar in his chambers.
His majesty was standing near the windows with his back
to them. The Pillar's grim expression was clearly reflected
by the glass panes.
"Ferio, I intend to have a private word with your
master. You may leave us for the moment," the Pillar stated
in a slightly bored tone.
Innova forced himself to sit up, despite the pain. He
looked down to find his entire torso swathed in bandages, as
well as both his upper arms.
"What have you learned of the Autozam spy?" The Pillar
turned around, his piercing gaze at Innova. "Where is he
hiding Princess Asuka?"
"Sire, the Autozam spy is currently travelling with the
Knights." Innova bowed his head in shame. "But Princess Asuka
is not with them. I regret to inform you that I do not know
where he is keeping her."
"Is that all?" the Pillar asked tightly.
"I also came across information concerning the fire
that consumed the armory. It was not the Autozam spy's doing,
as we first thought. It was an attempt on Princess Asuka's
life."
The Pillar's smiled thinly. "My hold on Fahren is
tenuous, at best; Princess Asuka would be of no use to me if
she were dead. Ironic, isn't it? I have that Autozam rat to
thank for saving her life."

'Heaven sees with the eyes of the people. Heaven hears
with the ears of the people.'
The old man looked up from the text he was studying to
glance outside the red-latticed window of his den. A golden
fish jumped out of the pond, its jaws snapping at the
unfortunate dragonfly that hovered just too near the water
surface. He stroked his long white beard and smiled to
himself as the fish dove back with a splash into the watery
depths of the pond.
He placed a joss stick in his gold-plated censer and
inhaled nasally as the smell of incense filled the room.
Satisfied, he sat down and went back to his book.
He was already well into his reading when there came a
polite tapping on his door.
"Enter," the old man commanded in a reedy voice.
A young, dark-haired boy came in, carrying a stack of
old scrolls. "Where do I put these, Master?" the boy asked,
blinking his beady little eyes to keep them from watering at
the overwhelming smell of burning incense.
"Inside that cabinet to your right," the old man off-
handedly instructed without looking up from his text.
Suddenly, a slight draft permeated the room. He looked
up to see the expression on his apprentice's face, enough to
surmise that the boy felt it as well.
"You may leave now, SangYung."
"But-"
"Leave. Now."
Years of enforced obedience and discipline finally
forced SangYung to bow down to his master's terse command.
"Yes, Master."
"Do I dare to assume that this is merely a social
call?" the old man addressed his unseen guest as soon as his
apprentice left the room.
"Greetings, Prime Minister," Alcyone returned as she
revealed herself to her less-than-solicitous host. "No, this
is not a social call. I simply wanted to remind you that you
still owe me from our previous dealings."
"You already have the Sacred Scroll of the Dragon
Court."
"True," she said, her eyes glittering like shards of
ice. "It took me some time to translate the entire thing,
only to find out that the last part was missing!"
"I promised to give you the scroll containing the
ancient secrets of the royal family, and that I did. I did
not, however, promise to give you the entire text."
"Bastard!" Alcyone ungraciously spat out. "You
deliberately tore off the incantations in the text!"
He gave her a hard glance from beneath his bushy white
brows and simply stated, "You were not worthy of it."
"And you are?" Alcyone continued tauntingly, "You, who
couldn't even manage to come up with a competent assassin to
kill one royal brat."
"She lives?"
"Sad to say that Princess Asuka is very much alive.
Didn't your dear assassin came back to tell you that?" she
asked baitingly, knowing full well that she herself killed
the man when he failed on his first attempt to assassinate
the Princess.
"You lie!"
Alcyone smiled cattily. "You must be getting senile,
old man. Setting the armory on fire was not exactly the best
way to kill someone."
He seemed to be carefully weighing the consequences
before arriving at a conclusion of which he was not too fond.
"What do you want, Alcyone?" he finally asked.
"I expect you to hand over the incantations for the
spells. In exchange for that-"
Alcyone suddenly stopped. She listened intently for a
moment, her eyes narrowed warily.
"We'll talk about this later," she abruptly said, and
stealthily retreated into the shadows.
The old man waited for a full minute to elapse before
he called out to his apprentice, "You may come out now,
SangYung. You could not possibly be comfortable, scrunched
under that table."
SangYung reluctantly unfolded himself from his hiding
place and crawled out with a fearful expression on his face.
"Oh, forgive me, Master Chang-An!" he babbled, touching his
forehead to the floor. "I deserve whatever punishment you
will impose upon me!"
"Stand up, SangYung, and quit your babbling!" he
exasperatingly stated. "Consider yourself fortunate that she
decided to overlook your presence in lieu of someone else's.
Otherwise, you'd be dead by now."
______________________________
Alcyone opened her eyes and found herself back in
Cefiro, inside her own chambers. Her wards floated around
her, glowing faintly in the gloom.
"They're all worthless!" she hissed, incinerating the
wards with an angry flick of her hand. Despite her meticulous
preparation, someone was still able to undermine her plans.
The walls have ears.
Her blood ran cold at the thought of the Pillar
discovering her hand in Fahren's political conflicts. His
Majesty was not a merciful man. And she was not exactly eager
to court the Pillar's wrath.
Alcyone stared at the walls and smiled coldly in grim
resignation.
Walls could be destroyed before they could echo what
they heard.
______________________________
Umi entered the egg-shaped tent carrying a dinner tray.
She walked in and found Fuu sitting on the bed, staring
listlessly into space.
"Fuu," Umi urged quietly, "here, I brought you
something to eat."
"Thank you. But I'm not hungry," Fuu replied without
looking at her.
Umi's hands tightened on the tray when she noticed
Fuu's bandaged arm. "You have to eat to keep your strength,"
she said, trying to keep the frustration out of her voice.
"I'd like to be alone now. If you don't mind," Fuu
said, without even looking at her.
"Fuu, listen to me! Have you ever considered the
possibility that the one who attacked you is the 'Ferio' that
exists in this reality, and not the Ferio that you and I
know?"
Fuu shook her head. "It's him, Umi. Do you think I
would not know?" she asked, placing a hand on her chest, "I
can feel it here. He is MY Ferio. That is why it hurts so
much."
Umi reached out, but stopped herself short, not knowing
if Fuu would welcome her concern. "We may not know if things
would turn out for the better or for the worst. But one thing
I'm sure of, we'll come out of this together. Like we always
do." She went outside to join the others.
Halfway towards the campfire, she was waylaid by
Mokona, who scampered up to her and 'Puuupuu'-ed inquiringly.
Gryff looked up to see her sullen face and put down his
half-finished meal. "How is she?" he asked.
Umi shook her head. "Not good. She still believes that
Ferio was the one who attacked her."
"Fuu's right," Hikaru said.
"What do you mean?" Gryff asked, despite the feeling
that he would not like the answer that he was going to get.
"The Ferio in this reality is already dead. He was
drowned in the lake of Eterna," Hikaru explained.
"Was drowned? You mean he was murdered?" Umi sounded
aghast.
"That's what the Guru told me. Sol Zagato was beside
himself with guilt because he was not able to protect
Emeraude's brother. He even showed me where he was buried
back at the tower."
"You trust him?" Umi quietly asked.
Lantis glanced sharply at Hikaru, waiting for her to
answer.
Hikaru met his gaze squarely and shrugged. "I don't
know."
Umi felt the tension between her friend and the Kailu.
She immediately turned the conversation towards more pressing
matters. "Hikaru, I noticed the bandage on Fuu's arm. We've
been on the road for almost five days now and she's still not
strong enough to heal herself."
"That's not it."
Everyone turned to look at Lantis.
He was staring into the fire with a strained expression
on his face. "It's not because she can't. It's because she
won't."
______________________________
It was a relatively cold night.
Fuu turned on her side and heaved a frustrated sigh.
Her body was weary from the journey but her mind refused to
give her a moment's rest.
She was careful not to disturb Hikaru and Umi, who
happened to be sharing the bed with her, as she turned back
the covers and carefully got out of bed. She fumbled around
in the dark, looking for her cloak, and found it draped on a
chair. She threw it over her nightgown and left their tent.
She managed to sneak past Gryff. Lantis, however, was
nowhere in sight.
Fuu made her way into the forest and started to follow
a trail that ran close to, then away from, their campsite.
She walked until she felt the atmosphere turn humid.
She finally broke through the array of trees. Standing
at the edge of a clearing, she could see nothing but mist.
A cold wind blew and dispersed the ghost-like vapors,
revealing the shimmering surface of the lake.
The lake turned out to be a hot spring.
Fuu walked around, looking for the little nook that she
often heard Hikaru and Umi talk about. She did not have too
go far. It was indeed a cozy little place. Huge slabs of rock
bordered it on two sides, giving one a fair amount of
privacy.
"I don't think privacy would be much of a problem," Fuu
murmured musingly as she watched the mist rise up from the
spring and swirl about her.
Under the cover of mist and darkness, the young man
smugly kept his own counsel. Though he was conveniently
perched on a tree branch, the view only afforded him a hazy
picture of his prey. He heard her heavy cloak drop followed
by a faint rustling of linen nightgown.
A slight wind parted the mist. He felt, rather than
heard, her gasp at the sudden cold draft. His breath dammed
in his throat when he caught a glimpse of her.
She was beautiful.
She was standing in profile, waist-deep in water. The
sight of her graceful neck tapering to moon-kissed shoulders
was simply exquisite. Light and shadow played softly over her
slender curves and her pale skin seemed to glow in the
moonlight.
He watched her sink into the spring's welcoming warmth
until the water lapped against the soft swells of her
breasts. His body tightened at the sound of her blissful
groan as the steaming water closed around her weary body.
Fuu took off her bandages and placed her hand above her
wound. She began to concentrate and soon, her wound slowly
began to heal itself. Afterwards, she closed her eyes and
tiredly leaned back against the stone slab behind her.
He edged farther out on the limb, almost directly above
her. His right hand reached for the hilt of his sword that
was strapped to his back. It would be so easy - so easy for
him jump into the spring and slit her pretty throat. She
would be dead even before she knew what happened.
Quick. Painless. And very efficient.
He tried imagining her - dead eyes staring unseeingly
into the darkness, lips half-parted in a muted scream and her
body floating lifelessly on the water tainted red with her
blood...
_NO!_ his mind screamed with vehemence and revulsion at
the imagery he painted.
He was finally forced to confront truth. The one truth
that he tried to ignore from the moment he first set his
sight on his prey.
He can not kill her.
He turned away, cursing under his breath. That itself
was a weakness. And she was the one weakness he could not
afford.
______________________________
The whole camp was in a state of panic. Fuu was
missing.
Gryff was not a happy camper at the moment. He wanted
to kick himself in the head because it happened during HIS
watch - a sentiment he should have never told Umi. She was
angry enough to volunteer to kick his face in if anything bad
ever happened to her friend.
The four of them split up in order to cover more
ground. Hikaru and Mokona were left at the campsite to wait.
Lantis searched the forest while Umi headed for the river.
He, on the other hand, was tasked to check the lake.
Gryff just broke through the clearing when he heard a
faint rustling. There was no wind. He turned and saw
something move in the shadowy canopy of a huge tree whose
branches extended well over the edge of the lake.
He broke into a run, hoping he could get there before
it was too late.
The assasin heard something whizz by his ear and felt a
thin, almost invisible, cord wrap around his neck. He hardly
had enough time to slip his fingers beneath the deadly noose
before it thightened around his throat and forcibly jerked
him off the branch.
He saw his prey look up and gasp in surprise. Her eyes
met his, widening with fear and recognition.
"No!" she screamed, "FERIO!!!"
He caught the look of anguish and terror on her face as
he fell. His breath was literally cut short as the cord cut
painfully against his fingers and the skin of his neck.
"GUARDING WIND!"
Fuu summoned a strong updraft to keep Ferio from
falling. He reached for his sword, cut himself loose and fell
into the water.
"Fuu! Get the hell outta there!!!" Gryff shouted at
her.
Fuu sustained the spell. She watched from behind the
barrier of wind she placed around him. He got up and wiped
the water from his eyes. He brandished his sword and fixed
his amber gaze on her.
"Please...," she shook her head as she backed away from
him, "don't do this."
"FUU!"
The explosion drowned out Gryff's enraged scream.
He shielded his eyes from the flying debris and ran
into the smoke intending to save Fuu. The smoke partially
cleared to reveal the assassin standing with his back to him.
A small aglet shot forth from the silver disc on
Gryff's wristband, the cord wrapping itself around Ferio's
arm.
"You bastard! I have a mind to fry you where you
stand!" Gryff snarled between clenched teeth.
"You wouldn't dare." Ferio turned around with Fuu
wrapped in a cloak, lying unconscious in his arms. "Not when
you run the risk of hurting her as well. Now, release me and
drop your sword."
Gryff did just that and demanded that he let her go.
Ferio simply shook his head and said, "You're a bigger
fool than I thought."
______________________________
"GRYFF!" Umi gasped in horror when she saw him floating
near the edge of the lake.
Lantis was right behind her, taking one look at the
situation, he hurriedly took off his heavy cloak and boots.
He ran towards the lake and jumped into the water to fish
Gryff out.
"C'mon, we've got to help them!" Hikaru cried as she
dragged Umi along with her to the water's edge.
Lantis was already laying Gryff down on the ground when
they got there. He leaned over Gryff's chest and listened.
"He's not breathing."
His words snapped Umi out of her stupor. "Move," she
said in a commanding tone that did not warrant any argument
from anyone.
Umi knelt beside Gryff's still form. She tilted his
head upwards and started pushing against his chest with both
hands. On the fourth count, she leaned over, placed her mouth
over his cold lips and breathed air into his lungs.
1, 2, 3, breathe... 1, 2, 3, breathe... 1, 2, 3,
breathe...
"Don't you dare die on me, you jerk! I'll never forgive
you if you do, you insufferable-egotistical-freak! You hear
me, Gryff? Never!" Umi swore in frustration, her curses
turning into sobs as she pounded on his chest.
He saw the light, its brightness beckoned to him,
promising warmth and peace. Then, all of a sudden, he heard a
shrill angry voice cursing at him.
His forehead creased in a slight frown, he turned
around wondering where the hell it was coming from.
He did not see the light behind him fade until it was
nothing more than a silvery pinpoint.
"Breathe, damn you! Breathe!" the shrewish voice fairly
shouted to his conciousness.
Gryff tried to, he really did, but instead ended up
with a coughing fit. He doubled over, coughing out all the
water in his lungs, hacking his way though a series of
painful spasms, one after another. In the end, he could do
nothing more than lie back down in sheer utter exhaustion.
"You did it, Umi! You did it!" He heard Hikaru's
exuberant cry in the background, "Gryff's alive!"
"Of course I'm alive," he whispered horsely. "I
wouldn't be feeling this much pain if I were dead!" He opened
his eyes, saw Umi's tear-streaked face and smiled. "You just
don't give up, do you?"
Umi smiled back at him through her tears. "No."
______________________________
It was a relatively warm day.
Fuu woke up to the sound of bawdy cheering and clashing
steel.
She tried to get up and realized that she was naked
under the sheets. Blushing furiously, she started gathering
the sheet around her when she noticed a neatly folded white
lawn shirt, lying on the coverlet.
She slipped on the shirt - it was two sizes larger, and
ended just around mid-thigh.
Her leaf-green eyes began to survey the room - it was
pretty bare except for the bed, a side table, a closet, two
chairs and a table. There were no paintings or trapestry
hanging on the walls. There were, however, a few items on the
bedside table: a small clear glass ball, a rectangular piece
of paper with strange writings, a black feather burnt at the
tip, and a couple of dried windflowers.
A slight wind blew in from the open window, bringing
with it the sound of hearty chaos from the courtyard. Fuu
walked over and peered at the crowd below.
The soldiers cheered as the huge scimitar sailed
through the air and cluttered across the stone floor. The
victor smugly walked over to the disoriented young man and
offered a hand to help him up.
"I can see that your training hasn't suffered overly
much from my neglect," Innova commented as he pulled his
student to his feet.
Ferio wiped his bloodied lip and picked up his
scimitar. "It's good to know that you've fully recovered from
your mishap, my lord."
"I appreciate your concern." Innova sheathed his sword
and flicked a glance at the open window of the eastern
turret. "So, tell me, Ferio. Does the Pillar know about your
prized catch?"
"Yes. I am also tasked with her interrogation. The
Autozam spy entrusted Princess Asuka's safety to someone else
- the Pillar wants to know who," Ferio explained.
He did not bother to look up as he continued to walk
with his lord towards the stronghold. It was one thing to
know that he was being watched, quite another to acknowledge
the fact.
"I see." Innova nodded. "As it so happened, his Majesty
told me to inform you that he is appointing you as castellan
of this fortress until his return."
"What? But I thought-"
Innova cut him off in mid-protest, "I have to leave as
well. His Majesty wants me to address a small diplomatic
problem outside the country." He grabbed Ferio's shoulder and
smiled. "I trust you to do a good job in guarding this
stronghold."
"I will do my best, my lord." He bowed and was about to
take his leave when Innova called out to him again.
"And, Ferio..."
"Yes, my lord?" he asked.
"Watch your back."
______________________________
The crowd began to disperse. From an arched window, two
stories up, a pair of shrewd violet eyes watched the two
warriors leave the courtyard.
"Is there something you want done, Mistress?"
"Yes." A devious glint flashed across violet eyes.
"Innova's favored dog is hiding something. I want to know
what... or who."
______________________________
"Looking for me?"
Fuu was startled out of her skin by a deep inquisitive
voice. She whirled around and stared at an unfamiliar
expression sitting on an otherwise very familiar face.
"Ferio," she started, "That is your name, is it not?"
"Yes," he answered in a rather non-committal tone.
She was standing with window behind her. The shirt she
wore was rendered almost translucent by the light, giving him
quite a disturbing view of her slender curves. He belatedly
noticed that his shirt barely covered her knees, affording
him with too much legs to ignore.
_Damn her, for being so beautiful._
Fuu was irked by the fact that he just stood there,
looking at her without a flicker of recognition. He was
frowning at her as if she was nothing more than a puzzle to
be solved.
"Ferio, look at me." She carefully watched every nuance
of expression that flitted across his face as she walked up
to him. "It's me, Fuu. Don't you remember?"
"No."
The way he said it made her feel rather insignificant.
Fuu felt as if she had been slapped.
She faltered for a moment, unsure of how to proceed.
His cold indifference wounded her deeply. She hugged herself,
closing her eyes tightly, willing herself not to fall apart.
Ferio watched as a strange greenish glow began to
emanate from her. The wind inside the room began to pick up.
The window curtains billowed wildly before they got
ripped to shreds. His pillows were thrown across the floor.
The glass ball from his side table shattered against the
wall, the shards were immediately whipped by the wind.
"Stop it! You could hurt yourself!" Ferio shouted above
the chaos as he grabbed her, roughly cupping her cheek.
"Let go of me!" Fuu screamed, knocking his hand away as
she struggled wildly in his hold.
"Listen, to-" he turned, cursed roundly and suddenly
jerked her downward. "GET DOWN!!!" The two of them fell to
the floor just as a chair sailed over their heads and crashed
into the wall.
The sound of splintering wood snapped Fuu out of her
misery, making her realize the danger they were in. She began
to concentrate, channeling her powers and containing them
within herself.
Ferio tried to protect her, using his body as a shield,
until the maelstrom died down. Soon, everything stopped
swirling and dropped to the floor.
The room was quiet, the only sound they could hear was
their own breathing.
"Are you alright?" he asked hoarsely. He felt her head
nod against his chest in response. He gripped her shoulders,
pushed her away and looked down into her tear-filled eyes.
"I'm sorry," she whispered brokenly in a small voice.
"Dammit, woman! Do you realize what you just did! You
almost got us ki-"
Ferio never got to finish what he was about to say. He
suddenly felt her fingers against his lips, effectively
stopping his words. She leaned into him, her hands slid
around his neck, urging his head downwards as she lifted her
lips and kissed him full in the mouth.
Fuu felt his hands tighten on her waist, as if to push
her away - her mind cringed at the thought of rejection.
Then, he seemed to change his mind as he gathered her in his
arms and started kissing her back.
He had never kissed or have been kissed by anyone
before. He thought to simply press his closed lips against
hers, but the softness of her damp lips urged him to taste
her. He slanted his mouth over hers and ran his tongue
against the crease of her lips.
She gasped in surprise. He took the oppurtunity to slip
his tongue in her mouth and deepen the kiss. She whimpered in
fear, totally caught unprepared by her own reaction to what
he was doing.
He was so attuned to her that he knew the instant she
felt panic. Slowly, he lifted his head and brushed his finger
against her tear-stained cheek.
"I'm sorry," he whispered against her bruised lips, "I
didn't mean to frighten you like that."
Fuu opened her eyes as his hand fell away from her
cheek.
"Oh, no!" she cried aloud when she noticed the shards
of glass embedded at the back of his hand. "You tried to
protect me, didn't you? This is all my fault." She looked at
him pleadingly, "Let me heal-"
"Don't." His tone belied the gentleness of his action
as he caught her hand and helped her up with him. "This
doesn't change anything. You are still my enemy. It would be
wise for both of us not to forget that fact." He dropped her
hand and headed for the door.
"You're wrong," Fuu countered defiantly, "You may
consider me as a threat, but you were never or will ever be
my enemy."
Ferio paused at the doorway with his back to her and
asked, "Is that why you saved my life?"
"Yes."
He surprised her when he suddenly turned and looked
straight at her. "And, for that, I promise to guarantee your
safety as long as you are here." He almost smiled when he
read the genuine astonishment on her face. "I see that you
find that hard to believe. I may be the enemy, but I am not
completely without honor. Do not worry, my lady. My word is
my vow."
