NANI YO...?
A Vandread fanfic by Ukyou Kuonji
Disclaimer: Of *course* they're not mine... I just had a question for
them, okay?
Oooh! Vandred fanfiction.
*looks up at the title and grins* Well, it's nice to know that I'm not
the only one who's had ideas for it...
Vandred is property of Media Blasters in America, and I believe
studio Gonzo, Media Factory and Mori Takeshi in Japan.
Or perhaps Takeshi is merely the director. My memory fails me in my
old age...
============
Hibiki sighed as he climbed out of his Vandread, closed the hood, and
shimmied to the floor of the docking bay. If it wasn't one battle, it
was another: either these strange alien forces from Kami-knows-where
(he found it hard to believe that the parent planet, Earth, would be
attacking them), or from the allies he'd been forced to make. He hadn't
had much choice in the latter - he and his... what? Comrades? Hardly.
Bart and Duel were among the elite of Taraaku society. They'd never
have associated with him, a third-class citizen.
Was wondering about that. 'Duerro' seemed off, somehow. But I wonder
at Hibiki thinking 'Kami-knows-where', since the only real
ancestral/religious figure I can recall seeing in the series is
'Grandfather' on the men's side.
For the record, I *will* change that to "Grandpa-knows-where".
I suppose this is a matter of opinion... Duero seems dead on to me,
given the way that that's more or less exactly how they pronounce his
name. I dunno, but the name 'Duero Macfile' just screams 'cool' to me,
though this is more than likely due to the way that he acts than his
actual name. ^_-
And, of cource, the use of 'Duel' as a place-holder for Duero's name
just seems rather... off. ^_^;;; Probably cause the two words that
immeaditely spring to mind upon seeing that are 'Dual' and 'Duo'...
Hm... could be that 'Dual' (as in Maxwell) was what I was thinking of at the
time. Unfortunately, I'm a bigger fan of Utena than of Gundam, so that may have
affected my spelling.
Nice choice in exploring that bit about the men's culture, it's
something the anime seems to essentially just skim over. Certainly
doesn't seem to bother 'Duel' much. ;)
But no matter now. Regardless of former standing, they were thrown
together, and had to cooperate to survive. Even worse, they were stuck
on this ship, vastly outnumbered against these... these... *women*.
Another sigh escaped his lips as he collapsed into a sitting position,
leaning heavily against the Vanguard. Really, the women weren't such a
bad lot once you got to know them - hell, they were almost human - and
it was better than just the three of them fighting these huge mechanical
monstrosities. The combined force of the Vanguard united with the
women's Dreads created a nearly unbeatable combination, too. Even he
had to admit it.
'combined' 'united' and 'combination' all in one sentence. That
doesn't flow very well, but my mind is especcialy feeble at the moment,
and I can't suggest something better. >_<
'The combined force of the Vanguard joined with the women's Dreads
created a nearly undefeatable gestalt. Even he had to admit that.'
How's that?
Well, I prefer 'united' over 'joined,' but that just may be Elite Fansubs' word
for it. Then again, the whole premise is based on a line in the fansub as
opposed to the actually Japanese expression in the title...
And while the word sounds *really* cool, even*I* don't even know what a gestalt
is... how can I expect *Hibiki* to wrap his mind around the concept? I may just
use 'creation,' unless something better shows up
If only it didn't have to be so goddam personal. Even the very phrase -
"Unite with me, Alien-san!" - just felt so fucking *dirty*. The shower
he took after each battle wasn't just to wash away sweat... in fact,
that was only a side benefit.
Small nitpick here... Hibiki seems too intelligent to really curse in
such a manner... Just abit OCC. Yeah, this is IMHO, and without it
this entire little bit would fall rather flat, but that's just me.
^_^;;;
You're right, he doesn't. Again, I'm taking the rough 'Nani yo' expression, and
running with it. Besides, he's a lower-class citizen: would it be all that OOC
for him to have a lower-class tongue in his head?
On top of that, I had planned on him jumping to the conclusion that profanity
was off-putting to Di-ta, and resolving to use more of it for that very reason,
before she revealed that she *wasn't* offended, just uncomprehending. It didn't
quite work that way, but I left the salty stuff in. Personally, if you're the
type to use the word 'fuck,' most of the other four-letter words don't have
nearly the kick that one does, so you don't think much about using them.
The 'unclean' part, though, seems dead on... Though I would attribute
it to sheer bloody confusion than anything else. Goddess knows how a
male body would react if it's first exposure to a females curves is
having one shoved into your lap and then procedes to bounce around abit
in sheer happiness... o_O;;;; ^_^;;;;
No kidding... what the fuck, indeed...
"Alien-san!?" Oh, gods, no. Not her. Bad enough he kept winding up in
her Dread, in her lap, trying to do battle while she was gushing about
how happy she was to have been chosen by him. Why in hell did she have
to be around him when the battles were over?
That would be... Lita? No, I forget her name... they refer to her as
'leader', and she gets the best angst scenes. But as I remember it, Dita
(the offensive (hah) one) sat in _his_ lap, not the other way around.
Meia Gisbourne. I still find it odd that she seemed to get so much
screen time, in the series *and* the opening credits to the show.
Why so odd? She's got a lot of baggage, and that always seems to appeal to the
fanboys for some reason. It's like Eva: there's this whole protective nature
that Rei evokes, despite being a (literally) colorless figure.
But there were few allies to be had in this godforsaken space; there was
no point in antagonizing them. Especially her. She, at least, seemed
to like him as a person, not just for what he and his Vanguard could
do. The least he could do in return was try not to upset her by telling
her to 'shove off, bitch.' At least, not *all* the time. "What is it
now, Di-ta?"
Well, he could awlays try and hang out with Rat-Bastard... ;)
And this bit is *definately* OCC... the impression that I get from
Hibiki is that his exhasperation and irritation from Dita following him
around everywhere is that he has no clue whatsoever to *do* with her.
In every sense of the word. I mean, c'mon, she's his first girlfriend,
and he isn't even aware of such a concept(literally). ^_-
Okay, this may have been overkill on the swearing. OTOH, he *doesn't* come out
and say that. And even if he were to, why would that be OOC, given as you say,
his exasperation and irritation with her?
She was standing in the middle of the bay, twiddling her fingers
nervously, not daring to answer or even look up at him. He gulped;
whatever she was going to ask was gonna be difficult.
Hmm...
Yet he learns so quickly...
Actually, I figure he'd think anything she asks him for would be difficult.
Well, best to take it like a man. He climbed down to the floor of the
bay, and walked over to her. His heart actually went out to her as he
could see more clearly the embarrassment on her face. "Di-ta... what's
wrong?"
"Well... Di-ta doesn't know much about your language, Alien-san..."
He sighed. "Hibiki. Please. And it's the same language... you know
that, right?"
Now she looked up to face him, and embarrassment had been replaced by
confusion. "Well, I thought so too, but you keep using words Di-ta
doesn't know..."
Toukai: It's called 'slang', Dita... ask BC to translate.
Aheh. Now, there's a reaction I'd pay dearly to see when asked for a
translation... ^_-
Ditto.

***
This came from watching the Vandread fansubs. Great show, but it seems
odd to have characters who have had no contact with an opposite sex in a
century uttering phrases like 'what the f---' in certain situations.
Leave it to Di-ta to ask why.
So who's gonna explain this to her? Does anybody on the Nirvana know?
And if they do, would they be willing to share this information?
Well, you'd have a point, *except* that a number of reactions in
Vandread(Most notably inbetween Hibiki and Duero) to certain things
suggests that the practice of sexual relationships inbetween two men are
alive and well,
Actually, the way I understand it, male reproduction takes place in a lab... I
believe cloning may be involved. Odd, though, that both planets' societies
still seem to deem it necessary that a child be raised by *two* parents...
likewise sexual relationships inbetween two women are
alive and well on the Pirate's homeworld/society.
If you're talking about the Ohma-Fema relationship, again, there is some science
involved with the whole reproductive process (although the gestation process is
obviously more natural) I'm not sure that sex necessarily enters into it. And
that bit about 'the tube between their legs'; clearly the women don't seem to
understand how the, ahem, connection works. Of course, if anything, the men are
even more dense: even Dual(?) worries about the 'parasitic growth' Ezra has,
before the situation is explained to him (to his credit, he catches on quick -
but he may well be the brightest light in the marquee, being a doctor and all)
I mean, c'mon... All
that pent up sexual energy has to go *somewhere*...
Read 1984? Sexual energy can be channelled into hatred. And if the scenes in
the beginning of the series aren't some of the purest of that kind, I don't know
what is.
Of cource, that pretty much renders this entire piece moot. ^_^;;;
Quite.
Is still good, though...
Gladja like it, sugar. Will try to clean it up, though... thanks again for all
the feedback. It is *so* good to be back!
Itsu mo,
