Dear Ms. Davies,
I must begin by stressing that you'd have made my job much easier if you'd
made clear from the outset the origins of this manscript, not to mention that
your ancestor was the author and not you. At the very least, strongly consider
writing an introduction putting the text into historical perspective.
Please remind me just which conflict broke out in April 2001; at the time
Earth would have been torn by war and civil war beyond belief, even if there
had been no "Third World War."
I believe that my progenitor was probably refering to the "Spyplane Squabble"
between the Chinese government and the United States.
Of course! How thoughtless of me...
The Lady Mercury, from whom I learned what little I know about physics
during my studies at the University of Crystal Tokyo, would not be amused at
use of such jargon. Perhaps it reflects her great age, but she was the one
who taught me to speak in volumes and libraries, even if paper manuscripts
are almost unknown in our age.
What can I say? My gamete donor was, I recall, quite sincere about his
opposition to paper-usage; ironically so, as it's only because his manuscript
was printed out that it survived the centuries after his death.
(Feel free to do what you want, Chris, but "futuristic" lingo is kind of
annoying when not necessary--and it isn't here.)
Recall as well that the PRC's theoretical dedication to socialism was in
fact a dead letter in practice by the turn of the century;
While that may have been true, they underwent a dramatic increase in preaching
if not in practice after the public relations disaster of the '04 Olympics.
Perhaps you had in mind the 2008 Beijing Olympics? IIRC, Beijing was denied
the 2004 Olympics by two votes in the IOC, admittedly to China's great
embarrassment; hoever, there was no noticeable uptick in the level of Maoist
rhetoric in response. Their winning the 2008 Olympics was at least in part
compensation for having seen the 2004 Games "stolen" from them.
Much of it acquired, I take it, from those investors in GENOM that had
previously been active in the milleniarian grup SEELE, whose membership
contained a disturbing number of the world's best and brightest, I recall.
Even today, there's no *conclusive* proof that Rosenkreuz was associated with
SEELE, and most of the evidence we possess about their activities was only
revealed after the Jyurai started talking with us in the 28th century.
I won't dispute the evidence is circumstantial, but no less compelling for
all that. Certainly Rosenkreuz's dreams of remaking man to his blueprint had
parallels in Kihl Lorenz' thought.
I have forgotten who were the fourth party in US politics in the period.
The
Democrats, the GOP and the LP make three.
The Technocratic party, established in 1992.
[...]
It's not surprising that you've forgotten them. Aside from garnering 2% of the
popular vote in the 2000 Presidential elections for their candidate, Alexander
Luthor, they had remarkably little impact on history.
I see. Lady Mars never mentioned them at all, even when (for instance) she
made time to mention such ephemeral groups as the Social Credit Party of
Alberta.
You mentioned that boomers were cost effective enough to make them
affordable to even small forms even by the 2020's.
Initially, yes, but he also pointed out that most of these were sold at a
great
loss for Genom in order to popularize the technology. Such deals were only
made
with potential buyers with business licenses -- the family market seems to
have
been ignored. (For the best, I think.)
Well, yes, I agree completely.
I dimly remember from Lady Mars's lectures on the history of the period a
brief mention of something called "Galatea," a sort of superboomer that had
been created by Stingray.
Lady Mars, while a charming and merciful lady, was pulling your leg. "Galatea"
was a character in the 2140 video-drama _Bubblegum Crisis_, which was the most
distorted adaptation of the careers of the Knight Sabres since Dumas' _The
Three Musketeers_ and sequels described the career of Charles de Baatz, Sieur
D'Artagnan.
In Lady Mars' defense, the story is a bit more complex than this.
I didn't respond to your previous message at once because I had commitments
elsewhere. As you probably know, the Queen and Lady Mars were on Triton
yesterday, where both made speeches to the people of Nouveau-Montreal at place
Charest. Mars allowed me the honor of introducing her, though it fell to the
mayor, His Worship Mr. Louis-Phillipe Giroux, to introduce her Majesty herself.
After the public ceremonies there was a reception at pavillon Levesque on the
campus of UdeN-M, and I had the chance to speak to my old teacher at length.
(We spoke French, which Mars speaks beautifully; my spoken Japanese, while
functional, is not nearly as beautiful, I'm afraid, in spite of my Japanese
family name.) I delicately brought up the issue of Galatea; I accused Mars of
nothing, but merely mentioned that I had been told that the rumor was a figment
of a hack writer's imagination, and gave her the details you gave me.
Mars went quite red. She excused herself, walked a bit too quickly over to
where the Queen was conversing with Mr. Giroux, said merely, "May it please your
Majesty," and left the reception hall, her Majesty in tow.
After they had not returned after twenty minutes I went to look for them
myself, fearing I had offended Lady Mars. Imagine my surprise when I found them
in the women's bathroom, tugging at each others hair and mouths, pulling faces
at each other, and shouting and quarrelling in a way completely inappropraite
for nobility. My daughter, Tsubasa (currently in Grade 7 at College Notre-Dame
de Nouveau-Montreal) is, at her most childish, more ladylike than her Majesty
and Lady Mars were behaving.
As I said, my Japanese is not what it should be, but the tone of the quarrel
was clear.
"Se-RENA! Do you have any idea how STUPID you've made me look?"
"RAYE! I was just kidding! You mean you taught that line of bull in your
_class_? Jeez, Amy's only got the _whole series on her shelf at home_, for
crying out--"
I had meant to quietly make my escape, but at that point I coughed
involuntarily, attarcting their attenion. They immediately composed themselves,
and the Queen donned that calm, serene smile that is her hallmark, though it
was not nearly as reassuring in person as it is on television.
"Is something the matter?" I asked in French.
"Nothing at all," replied the Queen. "_Excusez_." (Rather than
"_excusez-moi_," which is technically standard. I should mention the Queen's
command of Tritonian French idioms is remarkable as well; it did wonders for
her speech at place Charest.)
"You didn't see that," said Mars, looking most upset.
I do not wish to speak ill of Neo Queen Serenity, so I shall not elaborate on
what the incident might have done to my confidence in the court--much less how
it might have increased my sympathy for the sovereignty movement in the Outer
Sol System. I will simply say instead that I am in your debt for allowing me a
perspective on our queen and on my old teacher that I could never have
otherwise enjoyed.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Kiryu-Miyazawa, Ph.D.

(Well, now I know what you thought of _2040_, Chris, and more to the point how
you plan to deal with it. I liked most of it myself, though the ending, to be
frank, sucked rocks. Jeanne Hedge thought it would have been fine, if the
producers had not insisted on naming the leading ladies Sylia, Priss, Linna and
Nene.
