Just a note before I get into the body of my post: Private responses,
please.

One thing I like about fanfics is that you can write fanfics of other
people's fanfics. That is, there really wasn't anything stopping me
from using Jack Staik's "extensions" of some Ranma characters when I
wrote "Overlord and Peacemaker". However, one concern has come up;
namely, if the readers haven't read the fics that mine is based on,
they won't understand it that well.

Since my next fic is also likely to be a sequal/side-story to another
fic, I thought it would be worth asking this:

If a fic took first place in the Monthly ranma fanfic awards, you know
it's likely to be good, but is it equally likely to be well-read?

How many people really vote in those things anyway?

And if I base my work in the universe of another fanfic writer, is it
less likely to be read than if I just derived straight from Takahashi?

Thanks, everyone. Hopefully, after I consider the answers I get,
you'll see some more from me soon.

Once again, please reply off-list.
