"Doctor Miiisu." A hand shook her roughly. "Doctor
Miiisu! The Admiral will see you now."
"It's Mi-zu-no," she mumbled the automatic response,
even half-asleep. She squeezed her eyes together,
hoping for a few more minutes of oblivion.
"Dr. Mi-su-nuu," the executive officer tried, but was
several years past caring about being polite. "please get
up." He yanked the covers off the dungeree clad woman. "The
Admiral is waiting."
He handed her the worn Peacoat that someone had pulled
out of storage for her. "What does he want?"
"I'll let him be the one to brief you." Ami noted that his taking
refuge in military formality seemed to comfort him. She smiled
vaguely at him, knowing that for all he knew, evil MilGov was
sending this helpless girl off on some suicide mission.
CINCOMPAC Admiral Samuel Washington stood on the bridge,
surveying the 345 feet that made up the most powerful and
sophisticated thing afloat. He looked up as the Ami climbed to
side. He grunted, perhaps the politest thing he'd said to her since
she had first stepped foot on his boat.
"Doctor, I don't know what you did to convince the brass, to
turn you loose on you own, but I have my orders. The helicopter
is out. Even with that damn Cleaner signal off the air, I won't risk
it. My fleet," his gesture took in the converted yacht and the Safeguard
class Salvage ship that made up the blue water component of the
Pacific Fleet, "should be okay as long as we don't run into any cub
scouts on pool floats."
" So we're staying off shore and I'm sending you in on a whaleboat.
We'll check at eleven hundred hours for three days running, and
then I report you as dead. And we leave."
He held up one hand, to forestall her comment, "Yeah, I know,
MilGov said extend you every assistance. This is every assistance!
However, if you want, I can turn around right now and get you to
Macross Island. And we can rebuild that ship and ." His voice
trailed off suggestively. "I know there will be no repercussions."
Ami sighed, "No, thank you anyway. After I return, then we'll
see, won't we?"
He glared and called out to an commanding officer of the Destroyer
escort. "Mister, see to getting her ashore."
+++++++++++++
The boat pulled away from quayside, skirting the bobbing wreckage
and quickly disappearing into the thick clouds of smoke and ash
that covered the waterfront area. Ami pulled her Henshin pen out.
"Mercury star power, make up" she called.
The tracker was, as she had guessed, useless; she followed the map
she had memorized. "First, this Geofront and take care of why I was
sent here, and then Juuban."
As she walked, her mind insisted on drawing in memories to cover
over the reality of what lay beneath her feet.
Tokyo Towers still stood, not a stump with dead SDF soldiers laying
there still unburied. The Ginza teamed with shoppers. Not sad eyed
waifs, looking three and three hundred all at once. Malnutrition, Dr.
Mizuno noted, they are probably six or seven, the effects of starvation
during their young lives would leave them physically frail and mentally
damaged. Somehow she doubted if there were anyone to care.
She paused to brush the flies off one child, who sat staring at her
when she realized that his arms ending in stumps. The man cradling
the child looked about thirty, her age, and had the look of a man she
had known as a child whose body had made it home for Iwo Jima,
but, she secretly hugged herself, at least he did care.
She went to a train station. No throng of salaryman awaited
her. Rather the train laid toppled to one side as if Godzilla had
thrown it aside in a fit of pique.
There were other sights too, ones that she was glad that the smoke hid.
If the permanent pall of black smoke had not been there to shield the
Home Islands from space, and she could have seen satellite photos,
well, she doubted if she could have made the trip back.
++++++++++++++
The wreckage that made up the access way to the Geofront was almost
a relief; Ami shook and tried not the think of that arm that had slipped off
the catwalk and landed on her. The tooth marks on it were from no rat
or carnivore.
Sweeping her light before here, she came at last to the computer room, a
woman, emaciated and pale, was hunched over a terminal.
"What!? Who?" She spoke in a cautious, rusty sort of way.
"You came!" Now she was crying. I found this back door to the Net.
And I called and called. You heard me!"
Ami spoke cautiously, "The Intelligence man said, that someone named
Natsume Akiko had tapped into the Cleaner's data links. That this i
nformation was unique, and the price for it was to bring her out."
She nodded, ".and some toys my father made for me, Poison one is
gone I'm afraid." She added, "At least my foster daughter didn't break
in this time, she was such a destructive child.""
++++++++++++++
"Natsume -san," Ami knelt down beside the woman who was
still blinking at the diffuse light of smoke covered sky. I am going
to check on some friends, Unless I miss my guess they should be
down there."
"Good Luck, I wish I had friends, I hope that Kyuusaku
doesn't hate me anymore as he watches me."
Ami noticed that the way up to the shine was swept. Then seconds
later that Rei was standing in the doorway. "Rei!!!!" She paused in
her headlong rush to hug her as she noticed that Rei's eyes were
tracking her entirely too slowly.
"Ami?!?! Usagi, Ami-chan is back."
Suddenly awkward, she held out a bundle, "I found these.
Some magna."
There was this scrapping sound, then a short patch of blonde hair.
Usagi pulled herself into the room, "Ami!"
Rie glared at Ami, "You came back, we all had so hoped you
were safe in America. No matter what was happening to us one of
us was safe"
Ami grimaced at the memory, recalling trying to fight, to bribe, to
claw, to lie and cheat her way back to her friends, "I tried to
come back, this was as fast as I could make it."
She bowed her head in apology.
Rei just looked at her, her eyes first settling off to one side then
fixing on her as Ami made an effort to breathe heavily, "Come."
Rei ushered Ami out to the area behind the shrine, she bowed once
and clapped her hands, Ami following suit. "That's Grandpa," She
indicated a heap of earth. "I had to bury him with my father." her
voice faltered a bit at this last.
"Matako, never lost hope, or trust. There was a group of orphans,
She was torn, wanting to stay here and needing to go which the orphans.
Usagi made her go. Luna is over there." She jerked her chin to a
small pile of dirt. A flower rested before it, as, Ami noted suddenly, one
rested before each mound.
"When Luna died, Artemis disappeared." Rei continued playing
tour guide, "I hope he went cleanly."
An unearthly howling can from the end of the garden, Rei stood
and watched as Usagi pulled herself to a hut, "Mina." She nodded
at Ami's look, "Usagi folded often and unfolded whenever someone
one needed her. Now, Mina needs her all the time."
Rei's eyes sharpened, "Why are you here. And in sailor garb from
the feel of that hug" She grinned imprudently, "If the Death
Busters are back to conquer this place, I'd say let 'em have it"
"Oh," Ami's eyes filled with tears, "the Americans sent me here,
I am scouting. To see what things look like, I hoped to get you out."
"Who is she." Rei indicated the front of the shrine, where Ami
had left Natsume.
"The only way I could convince them to let me come over, was to
find her, She has some information "
"I'm also here to take you out of here."
"How?" Rei asked bluntly, indicating the surviving Senshis condition.
"Most of Tokyo isn't as cheerful as this place. You'd never get us out."
"I know you'd die for the Princess. Now you have to do something even
harder, live and remember us. I know you can do it. We're 'Pretty
Soldiers of Love and Justice',"
"The cleaners had already come to cleanse us. when we sprang Minako
from that hell hole." Rei gave a half familiar glare. "It was then I found
that there were some benefits to being blind.. Usagi wouldn't eat for
a week."
Rei's broad grin made the puckered scar that crossed her left cheek
stand out boldly, she patted Ami awkwardly on the shoulder. "Now,
go back and save the world. We'll get by."
"Hey Meatball-head, you want to say goodbye to Ami-chan."
Rei took the choice away from Ami, who was left holding her
mouth open.
Usagi came out of the hut, hobbling on her twisted legs. "Bye, Ami.
Thanks for the magna." She snatched two pieces of ash out of the air.
"Please, I heard what you said, Rei is right. We have our fate as do you."
Ami looked at the door she was guarding, but the Princess shook head,
"No, I want you to remember Minako the way she was." Then she
whispered, "Us too."
Usagi half stumbled, half fell through the door. "See, Mina-p, a
snowflake and a cherry blossom. A good sign, spring after a
long winter."
Usagi poked her head out one last time. "I'll see you in Crystal
Tokyo, Mamo-chan too, I still dream of him, but he knows that."
The smile was radiant and pure Usagi.
Like the sudden sun that broke momentarily though the sullen skies of
Tokyo on the blooming cherry trees.
