Does he generate this
energy himself? Or does he just channel the power from
another source?

Possibly: ki is a manifestation
of ability to tap vacuum/zero-point energy (which has been shown to
exist); control comes through control of the quantum events that
generate this energy, which comes from certain manipulations of
conscious thought

And on that note...

Ranma's pride and joy is a living nightmare.

Martial arts, especially ki manipulation, was the main focus of his
entire life, literally from his earliest childhood memories thanks to
his father. It came at the expense of so many normal childhood
experiences; to this day, anyone who learns his story can not help but
pity Ranma. Not that they would be inclined to help him; oh, no, he is
too useful as he is.

By the time he entered college, he was nearly undefeatable in combat.
By the time he left college...well, perhaps he never officially left
academia. The records got a bit sketchy in what would have been his
senior year, and he certainly did not attend graduation, though no
reasonable person would now label him a student. Researcher, perhaps,
maybe even professor - but not a willing one.

Ranma, you see, was always in top physical shape, but he had raw
intelligence to match his body. Unlike his body, though, he was
actually not conscious of his great ability to learn; certainly, his
scholastic grades were not the highest. Constant pressure to learn new
physical applications of his arts did not help, but once he got away
from that pressure and into a place where minds were more valued, he
changed. Exploded, one might even say, though only in ability to use
his abilities, as he shifted from merely sensing the world around him
to, for the first time, learning how the world really worked.

Then he learned about quantum mechanics, and figured out just how he
had been generating his legendary amounts of ki. (Any serious modern
student of the topic will already know this, but it bears repeating:
while quantum mechanics were already known, and he knew instinctively
how to manipulate that to generate energy, this was the first time he
consciously knew that he had been adjusting quantum states.)

Historical note: the crater he made in one of his first experiments to
validate this is now a monument. It is but several meters wide; the
reports of it being tremendous usually leave out the fact that Ranma
had expected to make a blast no bigger than his fist, so it was
tremendous relative to expectations. It is very fortunate that he had
enough foresight to experiment in a deserted park, rather than in the
crowded cafeteria where the experiment first occured to him.

Much of the next few months is well known history; it suffices to say
that he discovered the basis for much of modern energy production. For
the record, he did break the light speed barrier during this time, but
only twice (I saw the first, and he took me along the second time);
claims of independent discovery were made by those who did not know
Ranma had done this first. And, of course, he powered the entire
campus by charging and recharging a series of batteries, enough to
provide the entire campus's power needs for that time (though they were
tied into the municipal power grid for backup, and resumed service when
Ranma insisted the experiment was over).

This, dear readers, was his single biggest mistake. I knew what would
happen and advised against it, but he had to know. Perhaps the next
steps were inevitable, but I can not help but feel that he could have
forced a better conclusion had he known more before he attracted the
wrong kind of attention.

Yes, I said wrong. The government still says that Ranma volunteered to
have his mind read to extract the information. I was there, and that
is not what happened. His mind was raped.

There is no better word for it. They never negotiatied; they never
even bothered to ask. What Ranma knew was too valuable to allow him to
say "no". They assembled a psionic assault squad, burst in
unannounced, took everything they could from his mind while freezing
him in place, and left. My own sister saw this, but rather than
counterattack, she asked them what they were doing. Maybe, if she had
known, she would not have just stood there long enough for them to
fire, but she was apparently psi-blind. We will never know now, of
course, since the tests were not released to the public while she
lived, but she fit the symptoms. Now, she's just another corpse,
offically diagnosed with heart failure despite the bullet hole in her
chest. Ranma is powerless to do anything, and I...well, I can write
the truth.

Once the knowledge was out there, to cover everything up, they said
that Ranma gave them this knowledge, and was now dedicating his life to
finding new applications of ki. We have all benefitted greatly from
the revolutions this knowledge has granted: limitless electrical power;
radically improved health, strength, and awareness; FTL transport,
indistinguishable from teleportation over planetary distances, and
allowing for both rapid transit to our colonies on Mars and Venus and
feasable exploration of the nearby stars; and more that has been listed
elsewhere. Many of these inventions are rightly credited to Ranma, and
he keeps coming up with more.

But none of you really know why.

We, as a society, are addicted to his products. Every time he
significantly advances his art, the psi rippers come in to "document"
his new knowledge. They say this procedure is painless, if you can
even get them to admit doing it. I've heard his screams of agony, and
I know they aren't screams of pleasure. The only good part is that,
once the knowledge has been extracted, it is released to the public for
everyone to use. If Ranma were, himself, doing all the things we use
ki for today, I have no doubt he would have died of exhaustion long
ago.

Ki manipulation is all he knows.  He can not help but advance his art;
it comes naturally, and the circumstances he is held in are designed to
encourage it. I am only allowed to contact him when it is desired to
grow him in a romantic direction, or to explore sexual applications.
Given the monitoring of his environment, both physical and psionic, I
can not alert him to his fate; fortunately, they do not track me once
away from him, else I could not write this. I would not even know the
new name they have given him if I were not allowed to contact him, but
since we were "married" in one of the encounters they allowed, I have
taken his name as mine.

He knows, vaguely, of how much society uses what he discovered. That
is one of their main ways of fuelling his pride, keeping him from
questioning his controllers. They have even manged to erase his memory
of Akane's true fate. But not mine.

Perhaps they know what I am doing, and deign me not a threat. After
all, can I recruit any allies to help me rescue one man, at the expense
of our civilization's cash cow? Who would be insane enough to do such
a thing?

Answer: anyone who knew him, enough to treat him as a human being
rather than a resource to be exploited as ruthlessly as possible.
Shampoo, Ukyo, Kodachi...I know you are out there. And your friends.
Ranma is mine, but even so, I know...I hope...you still care enough
about him to rescue the man you once loved.

To anyone else who gets this, I will not object to more help, but I do
not expect strangers to risk life and limb for me. What I do hope is
that, having read this, you will carry the truth in your heart, and
spread it to counter the government's lies.
