Oh, why not? ^_^
Me and my big mouth....
You said it...
*******
Worryingly thick columns of water spouted off the roof as Ithacus,
spiritual advisor to the downtrodden masses of Athens, watched from the
door of one of the city's lesser temples. The Lunars had been
interfering less and less in affairs on Earth as Beryl, for all her
insane craving for power that dwarfed even that of those who raped the
countryside for food and cared naught for the people who grew it, had
intercepted all trade and transport to and from the planet. The Lunars
had grown less and less formally concerned with Earth ever since their
puppets in Rome, and then Byzantium, had suffered so extensively at the
hands of non-magical "barbarians".
People and creatures gifted with magic could still be found if one
looked, but their blood was becoming thin over the generations, too
thin to sustain the spark of magic. What few rumors did persist about
magics - werecreatures, witches, and the like - were all negative.
Even some entirely nonmagical phenomena were branded "evil magic", like
that disease of beasts that drove men mad, foaming at the mouth and
attacking former friends, before claiming their bodies; in truth, these
"vampires" were nothing more than rabid victims of completely natural
causes.
Perhaps that was why the Lunars, with magic rich in their veins, had
become increasingly brutal when they did deal with Earth. Which gave
Beryl the motivated troops she needed to seize Lunar transport and
counterattack. The only thing he knew for certain was that it would be
a bloody battle...yet still, something in him yearned to know how it
would turn out. Figuring he had nothing to lose, he knelt and prayed
for a sign.
Two of them bounced off his head.
He recognized them immediately. The sigils on their foreheads were
unmistakable. "You!"
"Umm...hello."
He braced for combat, but relaxed when they failed to react. "You are
not here to savage our land, I hope."
They shared a look. "I've seen enough savagery for one day. How about
you, Artemis?" "Me too, Luna."
Ithacus nodded. "Then the battle has been engaged."
"Battle?" the white one snorted. "Try massacre. It's chaos up there."
"It was, anyway," the black one sighed. "It's all over now."
"Indeed? Please, come in. I'll feed you in exchange for news."
And from his diaries of that day was born the phrase, "the day it
rained cats," which would be modified by popular usage in the centuries
to come.
